Costa Rican women cry out "Not one less" | CNN

With slogans such as “We are the voice of those who no longer have a voice” and “Not one less”, groups of Costa Rican women convened by the Feminist Coordinator Against Femicides and Impunity marched to Central Park in San José this Wednesday , on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

"Stop sexist violence" and "Stop femicide" were also part of the messages that were repeated in other parts of the country such as Puntarenas and Liberia, where different organizations and the same municipalities carried out activities early on to make a call to fight for the “human right to a life without violence”.

According to the National Institute of Women, INAMU, until October 26 of this year, Costa Rica had registered 11 women murdered at the hands of their partners, ex-partners or strangers due to their status as women, in addition to 50 other women killed violently. , of which 41 are still under study to determine if they are femicides.

The National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Costa Rica, INEC, also warned about the increase, during the first half of this year, in calls for help to 911 related to domestic violence.

Pilar Ramos, statistics coordinator of this institution, told CNN that until July 54,747 calls had been registered compared to 53,329 in the same period of 2019.

According to UN Women, as the world was secluded from homes due to the confinement measures implemented to contain COVID-19, reports showed an increase in the already existing pandemic of violence against women.
