A court in Turkey today (Thursday) sentenced dozens of people to life in prison for some 500 people, including army commanders and pilots, who were accused of leading an attempted coup in 2016 from an air base near the capital Ankara.

More than 250 people were killed on July 15, 2016, as rebel soldiers led fighter jets, helicopters and tanks in an attempt to seize state institutions and overthrow President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.

It is the most publicized trial of dozens of people against thousands of people accused of involvement in the coup attempt, which Ankara claims was designed by exiled preacher Fathullah Golan, who lives in the United States.

He denies it.

Former Air Force commander Akin Oztork and other military personnel who served at the Bakinchi air base near Ankara have been charged with commanding an attempted coup and bombing of government buildings, including parliament, and an attempt to kill Erdogan.

According to the official news agency Anadolu, four of the liaison leaders, nicknamed "civilian imams" because of their ties to the Golan network, received 79 severe life sentences for attempting to assassinate the president, murder and attempting to overthrow the constitutional order.

Among the convicts were also F-16 pilots, who received severe life sentences - the most severe punishment in Turkey that would prevent them from receiving a future pardon.

The then chief of staff and current defense minister Holusi Akar and other commanders were held captive for several hours at the base on the night of the coup. A total of 475 people were on trial, 365 of whom are in custody. According to local media, their cases have been separated from the main trial.

Following the failure of the coup, Turkey - a member of NATO and a candidate for EU membership - has declared a state of emergency and its moves have raised concerns among its Western allies. 292,000 people have been arrested in the past four years, and about 100,000 have been jailed. Or suspended after the coup and some 20,000 ousted from the army. Turkish courts have sentenced more than 2,500 people to life in prison.

Although four years have passed, police continue to regularly detain suspects in talks with Golan The arrests are necessary in light of the security challenges facing Turkey against the "deep state" of Golan supporters within government institutions, which critics, human rights organizations and Western countries see as an excuse to silence the media and the opposition.
