In the video: Conflict between Netanyahu and Gantz over the establishment of a committee of inquiry into the submarine affair (Photo: Knesset Channel)

Here are four assumptions that emerge from each other that are unlikely to be challenged by a reader.

The first: The defense system is the most sacred system in Israel.

Therefore - and this is the second assumption - every decision made by those who serve in it is driven solely by the national-security interest of the State of Israel, and not, God forbid, by any other foreign interest.

The third assumption, which will immediately emerge, is that if there is a slight suspicion that security decisions were easily made for foreign motives, they should be exposed immediately.

The fourth assumption is based on the third assumption: it is easy and material to expose security decisions made for foreign motives if they are likely to harm state security.

It is therefore difficult to imagine even one reader, at least a Zionist, would disagree with one of these four assumptions.

So how did it happen that all the members of Netanyahu's party, its tweeters and messengers, who apart from being supporters of Bibi will probably also agree with these four assumptions, made the submarine and vessel affair such that it should not be dealt with, should not be touched, should not be mentioned?

A pit that any submarine business is politically bad for.

Netanyahu (Photo: Danny Shem Tov, Knesset Spokeswoman)

I'm not naive.

I am even willing to agree with Netanyahu that Defense Minister

Bnei Gantz has

used his position for political purposes.

True, it is indeed a disgrace that only now, for the sake of fighting elections, just before the government disintegrates, he decided to set up the committee.

He had to do so as soon as he realized he could not fulfill his political promise to set up a state commission of inquiry into the matter.

He had to do so not in the castrated format of the committee now, but under the Military Jurisdiction Act, with real powers.

But let's go back to Prime Minister

Benjamin Netanyahu

and his supporters.

The question of the meaning of the opposition to the committee does not stem from innocence.

The resistance is understandable.

Beyond the fear of which end of the thread the committee may still accidentally pull (most likely it will not be able to pull any end of the thread that the police missed), Netanyahu believes that any involvement in submarines is politically bad for him.

Those around him still believe that the only affair he fears publicly and politically is this affair.

Therefore, he uses his army of tweeters mainly against the publications and publishers of this affair - and with all his might.

Three difficulties

This is exactly where the great distortion in the discourse about this disturbed story begins.

A bit of order: It is worth roughly dividing the ramifications of the submarine affair into two main parts - those that raised suspicion and doubts about Netanyahu's involvement, and those that are apparently unrelated to him.

We will start with the first part, which includes, again roughly, three topics:

1.

Shimron Involvement

.

In the second half of 2016, questions arose from senior members of the defense establishment in a variety of press releases - where is Netanyahu's obsession with closing a deal with the German corporation ThyssenKrupp to purchase three submarines for about $ 1.5 billion, without the defense minister and defense chiefs deeming it necessary?

My colleague Raviv Drucker sat down at the News 10 studio on November 15 of that year, and revealed a fantastic story we did not know: The person promoting the deal is Adv.

David Shimron

, who represents businessman

Miki Ganor

, the German corporation's representative in Israel. It is the case of the prime minister, who knew nothing about Netanyahu's involvement in the procurement process, and Netanyahu said that he, for his part, did not know that his cousin and his lawyer represented Ganor.

Denied that he knew about the involvement of his cousin Netanyahu.

Shimron (Photo: Niv Aharonson)

A week later, Drucker revealed an email sent by the then Ministry of Defense's legal adviser, Ahaz Ben-Ari, to the then director general of the Ministry of Defense, Dan Harel, from 2014. It reads: "Besides receiving a copy of the National Security Council's request to you, call To me, Adv. David Shimron, representing the ThyssenKrupp Consortium, asked if we were stopping the tender proceedings in order to negotiate with his clients as requested by the Prime Minister. "

If the email describes the course of events, it could have been a smoking gun: here Shimron knows about Netanyahu's involvement in the matter and even used his name. But Shimron denied saying such a thing. A few weeks ago I published an interview I did with Ben Ari, in which he explicitly said that he remembers that Shimron told him the things.

2.

Egyptian submarines

: In the police investigation opened in February 2017 The then state witness in the affair, Mickey Ganor, said that the prime minister had authorized the Germans to sell improved submarines to Egypt, ostensibly without an update from the heads of the defense establishment.

The main characters at the heart of the submarine affair

3. The

Netanyahu share

affair

: After the disclosure of Netanyahu's share portfolio, there was an apparent suspicion that Netanyahu had an interest in ThyssenKrupp's success due to an indirect business relationship it had with the company's shares it purchased.

The investigation the Attorney General sought to do in this matter, which ended a few weeks ago, led him to conclude that there is no basis for suspicion that Netanyahu knew of any connection between his cousin Natan Milikowski's business and the purchase of the vessel from ThyssenKrupp (I have wondered here before how it could be denied without any At least ask him about it, but that's not his business today).

A stinking Pandora's box that was unparalleled

What of these three issues can the review committee headed by retired judge

Amnon Strashnov

touch on?

Shimron's story has been investigated by the police and nothing has been found;

Mandelblit decided not to investigate the stock story, and in any case the committee could not reach any findings in it;

And so we are left with the story of the Egyptian submarines.

This story is the ultimate expression of the fourth premise at the beginning of the article - making a decision out of a suspicious interest that may harm state security.

Netanyahu, it will be recalled, claims that there is a secret, for which he could not tell the heads of the defense establishment about the approval for the sale of the Egyptian submarines.

This?

So Netanyahu said, and we should all stand still?

Many of the leaders of public opinion in Israel 2020 think so, and even scold and insult those who dare to think otherwise.

It turns out that rummaging through this "secret" is inconvenient for Netanyahu.

Who knows, maybe it will turn out that this is not a secret that could have been hidden from the heads of the defense establishment, but the opposite?

A disgrace that only now, on the grounds of election battles, decided on the establishment of the committee.

Now look at how the discourse contorted.

Netanyahu, the army of his tweeters and the pipes of his messages, together managed to neutralize the natural instinct that exists in every Zionist citizen, to check whether someone made an unsafe security decision out of a foreign interest.

This is not an assumption spread by hostile journalists, or conspiracy theorists on social media, but by a long line of generals, brigadiers and senior members of the defense establishment, some of whom were there in real time and even wrote affidavits to the High Court. Netanyahu managed to produce a large part of the public His supporters have a stronger opinion instinct than defending the security of the homeland, and he is defending the security of Netanyahu, the leader persecuted by the black and dark forces - the justice and media system.

Let's let Netanyahu. In the second part of the submarine affair, there are all issues unrelated to him. What about them?

It is clear that the most interesting and intriguing of them is the alleged bribery cycle of Mickey Ganor, based on his connections with the then deputy head of the National Security Council,

Abriel Bar-Yosef

;

With Netanyahu's chief of staff,

David Sharan

; with the then navy commander,

Eliezer Cheney-Marom

; and more. It is quite clear that the committee will not be able to touch on this, even from a distance, because it is at the heart of the legal process.

But there is the envelope that allowed this terrible thing to happen.

The many affidavits filed by senior defense officials, led by then-Defense Ministry Director General Dan Harel, and the testimonies voiced by some in the media, raise the big question: How was this corruption made possible? How was this procedure conducted? How and why are the billions of taxpayers addressed to the defense establishment , With such contempt? Who is even responsible for this madness?

Defense Minister?

Ministry of Defence?

Chief of Staff? Who needs to be updated? The

absurdity is that we all thought that precisely in the security and military system these things should be clear, distinct, simple as in the 1980s (order exercises + armed order exercises).

As soldiers, we always wanted to think that just as we HFs (ordinary soldiers), marched in total by the Sgt. In "left-right-left", they up there also run the system in "left-right-left".

Suddenly we discovered that upstairs, the marcher may be less sergeant major with a mustache, and more ganor with a commission. Hello, Prime Minister, we are not naive, and yet, if that does not justify a commission of inquiry, then what?

A position of a citizen whose mouth and heart are equal.

Strashnov (Photo: Berni Ardov)

"After all the law enforcement agencies have repeatedly stated that the prime minister has nothing to do with the submarine affair," Netanyahu said this week, "Gantz appointed a tailor-made committee headed by someone who said a year ago that the prime minister should resign, so it will be interesting to wait ..." It is a great shame. No defense minister has used the IDF as blatantly as Gantz did.

We will start with the end. As mentioned, it is clear that Netanyahu is right - Gantz's motive is political and if he was honest, he would have set up a committee a long time ago. Netanyahu is well aware that the submarine affair is a stinking Pandora's box that has never been seen before in the history of the defense establishment, and that not really all the generals and lieutenants who wrote harsh affidavits about what they saw in this affair (they do not testify to him in these affidavits) did so to tie against him In an imaginary parallel world, Netanyahu had to react like this: "I am sorry that Gantz is acting for political motives, but I welcome the establishment of a committee that will examine the procurement process of submarines and vessels." How pleasant to imagine.

And as for Netanyahu's new paranoia - Judge Amnon Strashnov?

It turns out that in 2018 he wrote an article about Netanyahu's desired retirement?

Well, anyone who has followed Strashnov over the years knows his liberated statements, but Mr. Prime Minister, let's be real: the position expressed by Strashnov (without addressing the nuances in his article that not everyone agrees with), is the position of every decent citizen whose mouth and heart are equal.

Before half a country jumps on me, I will explain myself: if Strashnov had been more accurate, he would have simply quoted another wise man, who has been quoted here before, who expressed the idea much better, since he is a super-rhetorician.

The wise man said: "A prime minister who is engrossed in investigations ... there is a real and not unfounded fear that he will make decisions based on the personal interest of his political survival and not on the basis of the national interest."

Had this wise man, named Benjamin Netanyahu, expressed his opinion on what was happening today, he would have stated emphatically that the Prime Minister's opposition to the establishment of a committee of inquiry into the submarine affair, undoubtedly stems from the same "personal interest" he spoke of.
