The operator of the Russian part of the International Space Station “Energia” suggested giving up participation in the program and focusing on establishing a national space station.
Sputnik quoted Vladimir Soloviev, First Deputy Director General of Energia, as saying, "There are already a number of elements that have been seriously damaged and are out of service ... many of them cannot be replaced, and we expect that after 2025, many elements on board the International Space Station will be disrupted."
During the meeting Soloviev presented the appearance of the new Russian orbital service station "Rus" with an open structure and unlimited service life thanks to the change of units.
According to the plans, it will consist of three to seven units, which can accommodate from two to four people.
Roskosmos, in turn, said that it will start negotiations with partners in the International Space Station regarding the fate of the station next year, and said, "The issue of the life of the International Space Station depends on both the technical condition of its units, the estimated resources and the political issues discussed with the partners."
It was planned to use the International Space Station until 2015, after which the period of operation was extended twice to 2020 and 2024, and the parties are now discussing the possibility of operating the International Space Station until 2028 or 2030.
