2020-11-28T23:13:41.262Z

The 2020 US election has already been decided between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. One very important decision has yet to be made in the state of Georgia.

The 2020 US election has already been decided between Donald Trump and Joe Biden.

One very important decision has yet to be made in the state of Georgia.

  • In the 2020 US presidential election, Joe Biden is a serious challenger to Donald Trump.

  • The Americans will elect their President as well as the House of Representatives and the Senate on November 3, 2020.

  • Traditionally, Americans elect their president through an electoral system.

Update from November 27, 2020:

Joe Biden has won the presidential election in the United States.

In the 2020 US election, however, further decisions were made that give the Biden government the freedom to act.

His Democrats retained a majority in the House of Representatives.

On the other hand, things will be very tight in the second chamber of the US national parliament.

Whoever

has a majority

in the

Senate

will not be decided until

January 5, 2021 through two runoff elections in the state of Georgia

.

Republicans only need to win one of the two seats to get the upper hand in the Senate.

You could then continue to exert great influence on the legislation.

Joe Biden's term of office, who will then join the list of US presidents, begins on January 20, 2021. On this day, he takes the oath of office and takes over the business of government from 12 noon.

2020 US election: This is how the elections for the President, Senate and House of Representatives work

Preliminary report:

Washington - The battle for the

White House

will be decided between

Donald Trump

and

Joe Biden

.

Both prevailed in their parties on the way to the 2020 US election.

As always, the presidential candidates from the small parties have no chance for office.

On election day we will keep you up to date with our live ticker for the 2020 US election.

You will also find the election results from all states on Merkur.de as soon as the count is finished there.

Date of the 2020 US election in November

The 59th election for

President of

the United States in 2020 will take place on November 3, 2020.

Americans do not directly elect their head of state.

Instead, on this date, they determine the 538

electors

, who in turn elect the new US president 41 days later in a secret ballot.

The election is considered to have been decided as soon as a candidate has a majority of 270 votes from this

Electoral College

.

Due to the time zones and the time-consuming clarification of the validity of all votes, an official result is often only available days after the election day.

2020 US presidential election: Winner will take office on January 20

In any case, the Americans will not have a new president until January 20, 2021. Then the election winner will

officially

move into

the

White House

as part of his

inauguration

.

On this day, the new president traditionally takes over government.

The size of a state's population determines the number of electors that are sent out.

Delaware has only three, California has 55 members of the

Electoral College

The US election is about the majority of the electorate

The principle of “the

winner takes it all”

applies in 48 countries

.

In this case, the votes of all electors go to the candidate who previously received the majority.

Only Maine and Nebraska divide the electorate proportionally - that is, proportionally to the election result.

Should there be a stalemate of 269 electors, the

electoral system has

a solution.

In this case, the newly elected

House of Representatives

elects

the President.

Then each

state has

only one vote.

For many states, the outcome of the election can be predicted relatively clearly.

California traditionally goes to the left-wing liberal Democrats, in Texas the conservative Republicans always have the say.

US election 2020 could be decided by swing states

The

swing states are

often an exception, which is decisive for voting

.

In these states, neither party has been able to build a stronghold or structural majority over the years.

These include Florida, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and actually all states in which one of the two senators is a member of the Democratic and the other of the Republican party.

To Bernie and Jane, as friends, from Jill and me: You haven't just run a political campaign;

you've created a movement.

And make no mistake about it, we believe it's a movement that is as powerful today as it was yesterday.

That's a good thing for our nation and our future.

We know how hard this is.

You have put the interest of the nation - and the need to defeat Donald Trump - above all else.

And for that we're grateful.

But we want you to know: we'll be reaching out.

You'll be heard by me.

As you say: Not me, Us.

And to Bernie's supporters: I know that I need to earn your votes.

And I know that might take time.

But I want you to know that I see you, I hear you, and I understand the urgency of this moment.

I hope you'll join us.

You're more than welcome: You're needed.

Together we will defeat Donald Trump.

But we will also address the climate crisis.

We will make college affordable.

And we will make health care available to all. We will not just rebuild this nation - we'll transform it.

And I'm asking you to join me: [Link in Bio]

Primaries for the US presidential election have identified candidates

The

primaries

have decided who will run as a candidate for a party.

Voters voted for which candidate their state delegates should vote for at the national party convention.

The votes go to the individual candidates in proportion to their election results.

There is a 15 percent hurdle.

A

total of 4,750

delegates were

expected

for the

Democratic

Congress

, 3,979 from the states and 771 superdelegates.

Whoever gets 1,990 votes was nominated as a presidential candidate.

After all the other candidates had dropped out, the only presidential candidate left was Joe Biden.

Other prominent candidates have called on their supporters to stand up for Biden.

On the

Republican side

, the incumbent 45th President of the USA, Donald Trump, ran again for election.

Mike Pence is running again with him as Vice President.

The opposing candidates within the Republican Party had no chance from the start.

In fact, there are more than two presidential candidates.

Several small parties have registered candidates, although a victory against Republicans and Democrats is virtually impossible.

A nomination from the Reform Party, Alliance Party and American Independent Party was given to businessman

Rocky De La Fuente

, who had already tried himself as an alternative to Trump in the 2020 Republican primaries.

Jo Jorgensen is on the ballot for the Libertarian Party.

For the libertarians, she ran as a vice-presidential candidate in the 1990s.

TV duels in the USA: Multiple exchanges of blows before the presidential election

Trump and Biden have several opportunities before election day to win over indecisive voters.

The fight for the swing states is fought in direct exchange in front of the cameras.

A total of three TV duels between Donald Trump and Joe Biden were agreed.

Another debate takes place between the candidates for the vice presidency.

Mike Pence is for the Republicans, Kamala Harris is for the Democrats.

The dates of the TV duels are:

  • September 29, 2020: Donald Trump versus Joe Biden

  • October 7, 2020: Mike Pence versus Kamala Harris

  • October 15, 2020: Donald Trump versus Joe Biden

  • October 22, 2020: Donald Trump versus Joe Biden

The election day of the US election 2020 will also be broadcast on TV and live stream.

Many broadcasters in Germany announced a special program that night.

High age Democrats ahead of the presidential election

In the broad field of

Democrats

, the social democratic 78-year-old Bernie Sanders, the moderate former Vice President Joe Biden (77 years) and the liberal former New York mayor and billionaire Michael Bloomberg (78 years) were given the greatest opportunities from the start.

Pete Buttigieg, who was only 38 years old and a gay mayor from the Midwest, was initially considered to have good opportunities.

A former Harvard professor, left-wing Elizabeth Warren, also had outsider opportunities.

The prelude to the

primaries

took place on February 3rd in the state of Iowa.

The end of the primaries has been set for June 16 in Washington DC, the official presidential candidates will be determined after the

party's election congresses

.

2020 US election: preliminary vote for Democrats on March 3rd

In Iowa,

Pete Buttigieg

prevailed

among the Democrats

, who later withdrew his candidacy.

In New Hampshire, his party rival

Bernie Sanders made

the running.

“Super Tuesday” is traditionally considered the super election day for the primaries.

On March

3, 2020,

primaries were held in 14 states, including California.

Then there were the US territory of American Samoa and the Democrats abroad.

Overall, a third of the delegate votes were given.

On March

10,

another six states voted, including Michigan, Washington and Missouri.

At this time, the field of applicants began to thin out once more.

The tide turned for Joe Biden after a botched start in the primaries.

US presidential election polls

Several months before election day, the polls for the 2020 US election showed a clear lead for Joe Biden - and a few weeks before the presidential election, the forecasts for the Democrats looked good.

It is becoming apparent that election campaign issues such as the Corona crisis and the “Black Lives Matter” movement could become a stumbling block for the incumbent on the way to a second term in office.

However, it became clear four years earlier that these forecasts are not always reliable.

At the time, Trump was considered an outsider, but still won the election.

Inauguration after the 2020 US election: New President in January

Traditionally, more than two months elapse between election day and the inauguration of the US president.

Elections will take place at the beginning of November; January 20th is always the date on which the new term of office begins.

On January 20, 2021, either Donald Trump will be sworn in for his second term or Joe Biden will move into the White House.

Another part of the 2020 US election: Senate and House of Representatives

What is easily forgotten abroad, but is also very important for the Americans, are two more elections on November 3rd.

The day the president is elected is always some kind of super election day.

Both chambers in the US Congress will be filled - the Senate only partially, the House of Representatives completely.

Since 2018, the Democrats have held a majority in the House of Representatives again.

The 435 MPs are elected in as many constituencies across the country.

This election takes place every two years.

The United States Senate is only partially re-elected.

Every two years it concerns a third of the MPs whose term of office is six years.

Republicans hold a majority ahead of the 2020 US election.

In contrast to the “house”, each state - regardless of its size - has two representatives in the Senate.
