CDU on the side of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt: the black and brown danger

The CDU parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt wants to overturn the state media treaty - alongside the AfD. The case alarmed party leader Kramp-Karrenbauer.

CDU boss Kramp-Karrenbauer: A question of attitude

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer lives in two worlds these days.

In one of them she is a minister, a lot of things run by themselves, the newspapers are full of their theses on Europe, even the French President intervenes.

In the other, she is the CDU boss, there is little going on, nothing is in the newspapers, and no president intervenes.

Then Reiner Haseloff reports with bad news, and everything feels terribly complicated.

Like last Friday.

Kramp-Karrenbauer and Haseloff were on the phone.

He would try everything, promised Saxony-Anhalt's head of government reportedly.

But unfortunately he couldn't dictate anything to his MPs in the Magdeburg state parliament.

They are probably going through with it, that was, according to insiders, Haseloff's message.

Since then the Konrad-Adenauer-Haus has been in turmoil.

What Haseloff means is a thriller that threatens not only to burden Kramp-Karrenbauer's last few weeks as party leader, but could also put the CDU under heavy strain.

On a small scale, the question is whether Haseloff's coalition with the SPD and the Greens still has a future or whether it implodes before the state elections in June 2021.

In the grand scheme of things, it's about how the Christian Democrats feel about the right, whether the firewall is in place or whether it is slowly collapsing and crumbling.
