US President Donald Trump said tonight (Friday) during a Thanksgiving press conference that if the Electoral Commission does vote for President-elect Joe Biden, he will leave the White House.

This is his closest statement to the admission of loss in the presidential election since it took place.

Trump's remarks, made after a video call with U.S. military commanders on the eve of the holiday, are likely a further step in acknowledging the loss and as such may dispel fears the president will cling to his refusal to accept the election results.

When asked if he would leave the White House if the electorate voted against him, Trump replied that "I certainly will. And you know that. But if they vote against me, they will be wrong."

The president added that it would be "very difficult to admit the loss" in the current circumstances, and declined to say whether he would attend Biden's inauguration, which is set to take place on January 20.

However, Trump went on to insist that "this election is a scam," but again did not present any evidence to support his claim of violations in the vote count.

Tomorrow he is expected to attend a major campaign event in Georgia, where a January 5 Senate by-election will be held.

When asked if he plans to run again in 2024, as reportedly discussed with his advisers, the president replied that he "does not want to talk about 2024 yet".

A spokesman for Biden's election campaign responded by saying "President-elect Biden has won with 306 electors. Countries continue to approve these results and the Electoral College will meet soon and decide his victory."

He added that "Biden will be sworn in as president on January 20."

The Electoral College is expected to convene on December 14 when each state elects voters to vote in favor of the candidate who wins.

The votes will be officially counted by Congress on January 6th.

So far, Trump has refused to admit his loss, adhering to a series of baseless allegations of election fraud.

It has embarked on a series of legal steps aimed at undermining the results in several key states like Pennsylvania and Michigan.

This, while in Biden, received about six million more votes from Trump across the United States, reaching 306 electors compared to Trump's 232 - well over the 270 electors needed for victory.

Some members of the Republican Party have come up with an idea that proposes ignoring the vote in some states, appointing presidential electors and reversing the result in those states.

This floods the fear that the president will indeed refuse to leave office.

Trump's statement joins the fact that on Tuesday the United States Attorney General (GSA) informed Biden that he could begin the transition process between the incumbent president's administration and the new administration.

This, hours after the Michigan Election Commission confirmed his victory and thus almost completely ruled out any possibility that Trump would succeed in reversing the election.

Trump, instructed his team to cooperate with Biden's.

However, he made it clear that the legal battle he is waging against the results will continue.

At the same time, the president-elect began earlier this week in forming his government and announced a series of appointments to key positions.

Anthony Blink, who was secretary of state in the previous administration, will serve as the state's secretary of state, while John Kerry, who previously served as minister in the same ministry, will become special envoy for climate change.

Biden also announced that Jake Sullivan, formerly Hillary Clinton's senior political adviser, will be a national security adviser.

Avril Haynes, the Obama administration's deputy national security adviser, will be the head of national intelligence in the United States, and former Homeland Security Deputy Secretary - General Alejandro Myorex will be promoted to the post of minister.

It was also learned that Linda Thomas-Greenfeld, the former Deputy Foreign Minister for African Affairs, will be the country's ambassador to the United Nations.
