The judgments were made, among other things, for “attempted coup”, “assassination attempt on the president” and “willful homicide”.

coup
around the
Akinci Air Force Base

On the evening of July 15, 2016, parts of the
military
tried
to put a coup
against
Erdogan
and his government.
During the night, fighting broke out in Istanbul and Ankara between the putschists and state security forces.
The putschists were equipped with tanks and fighter jets and fired, among other things, at civilians who opposed them.
Erdogan had previously called on the civilian population to do so.
The
parliament building

was shot at during the fighting.
Over 250 people were
killed
in the
night of
the
coup
and around 2000 injured.
The coup attempt was finally put down by the government.

The maximum sentences of 79 times life imprisonment were given, among other things, to pilots who
are said to have bombed
parliament
and the
police
headquarters that
night
.
In addition, four men were convicted of
plotting
to
assassinate
the
president
and received maximum sentences.
The
trial
had already started on August 1, 2017.
The Turkish government sees the preacher
Fethullah Gülen as
the main
person
responsible for the coup.
He lives in the USA and still vehemently rejects the accusation.
According to a statement by the
Turkish Interior Minister
, to date 292,000 people have been arrested in government operations against the Gülen movement and 96,000 have been arrested.
Participants are still being sought.
As early as June of this year, numerous people who are said to have participated in the coup were convicted.
Some experts still assume that
President Erdogan
staged the coup in 2016 himself.
