Frenchman Romain Grosjean (Haas) had a spectacular crash on the first lap of the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix on Sunday and miraculously emerged with only “minor burns” from the fire in his car.

Shortly after the start, Grosjean's F1 went off the track following contact with one of the wheels of Russian Daniil Kvyat (AlphaTauri) and hit the safety barriers.

The chassis was cut in half and instantly caught fire but the 34-year-old pilot managed to extricate himself from the cockpit and get away from the blaze.

He suffers from "minor burns to his hands and ankles but is fine," his team told the media.

Grosjean was taken by ambulance to be examined by a doctor, as per protocol.

The Grand Prix was interrupted by a red flag.
