At 8:35 this (29th) evening, a fire broke out in a unit on the 19th floor of Oi Yat House, Oi Tung Estate, Shau Kei Wan.
After receiving the report, the firefighter dispatched a breathing apparatus team and used a throat to fight the blaze. The fire was soon put out.
The outer wall of the burning unit was blackened, and about 150 residents were evacuated to a safe location off the building. Some residents living on the 18th floor hurriedly fled their homes before wearing masks.
It is understood that an elderly man was rescued by the firefighter. His face was blackened and he was unconscious. He was rushed to the Eastern District Hospital by an ambulance and was eventually certified dead.
The police are investigating the incident.
