One week after the secret meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, this week Jared Kushner, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, will pay a surprise visit to Saudi Arabia.

U.S. administration officials said Kushner is also expected to visit Qatar.

U.S. officials said Kushner was leaving for Saudi Arabia and Qatar in a last-ditch effort to reach a deal to end the crisis between the two countries, as well as to further advance the normalization process between Israel and the Gulf states.

Kushner is expected to meet with Regent Muhammad bin Salman and with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad a-Thani.

In June 2017 Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain announced the suspension of relations with Qatar, and the closure of their air and sea space to Qatari aircraft and vessels.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have argued that the reason for the sanctions is Qatari aid to terrorist organizations and relations between the small country and Iran.

The Trump administration has tried to resolve the crisis several times in recent years, but without success.

During Trump's tenure, Kushner has forged a special relationship with Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman and with Qatari Amir Tamim bin Hamad a-Thani.

U.S. officials said the end of the Saudi-Qatar crisis would restore unity between the Gulf states, increase stability in the region, help anchor normalization agreements between Israel and the Arab world and be an achievement for the Trump administration and Kushner, before ending the presidency on January 20.

Kushner will travel to Saudi Arabia and Qatar with White House envoy Avi Berkowitz, White House International Assistance Director General Adam Bowler and former US Iranian envoy Brian Hawke, who has returned to the White House as a special volunteer adviser. Kushner's visit comes a week after the secret meeting between Netanyahu and the Saudi heir to the city of Naum on the Saudi Red Sea coast.

The existence of the meeting was first published in Walla!

NEWS.

The visit also comes a few days after the assassination of Iran's military nuclear program architect, Muhsin Fahrizadeh.

Qatar condemned the assassination, while Saudi Arabia gave it quiet backing.

Kushner's journey comes as the Trump administration tries to take advantage of the last weeks of his tenure to advance further normalization agreements between Israel and Arab and Muslim countries.

Kushner's relationship with the Saudi Crown Prince has been critical in recent months to the advancement of the "Abraham Accords" that have led to normalization between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan.

Following Kushner's efforts, Saudi Arabia has agreed to allow Israeli airlines' aircraft to use Saudi airspace for direct flights to Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

Kushner was also involved in the Saudi agreement to give Bahrain a "green light" to move forward with normalization with Israel.

Although so far there has been no breakthrough between Saudi Arabia and Israel, the meeting between Netanyahu and Muhammad bin Salman last week was a result of the shock waves of the "Abraham Agreements."

U.S. administration officials say Kushner hopes he can reach a deal that will resolve a series of disputes between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and bring an end to the crisis.

According to them, Kushner is also interested in finally anchoring Saudi Arabia's political decision to allow all flights from Israel to the east to pass through Saudi airspace.
