The leaders of the ultra-Orthodox factions, Shas and Torah Judaism, have in recent days agreed on a compromise to increase the fines for violating the Corona directives, but refrain from approving it with the Likud - political sources told Walla! NEWS. Although agreements have been reached to open businesses, educational institutions and events. The faction leaders are also interested in avoiding the softening damage to the sector they represent and thwarting the move completely.

At a meeting of the Torah Judaism faction, the party leaders raised the issue, and some present admitted that they deliberately refrained from meeting with Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin. In raising fines.

Some Knesset members explained that for many weeks morbidity in the ultra-Orthodox sector was low, and others argued that fines could not be raised on the day Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, a senior ultra-Orthodox rabbi, ordered a sweeping opening of educational institutions contrary to guidelines.

The agreements were reached after a meeting between the heads of Torah Judaism - Minister of Construction and Housing Yaakov Litzman, MK Moshe Gafni and Chairman of the Constitution Committee, MK Yaakov Asher - with the Speaker of the Knesset.

The parties met following the ultra-Orthodox's opposition to the original bill to increase the fines, which set a fine of NIS 20,000 for opening an educational institution or holding events and NIS 10,000 for opening businesses.

After threatening not to vote with the coalition, the proposal was removed from the agenda.

Since then, talks have begun between the Likud and the heads of the ultra-Orthodox factions, during which Levin proposed a compromise, the details of which were revealed earlier this month in Walla!

NEWS.

Under the proposal, police officers alone would be able to distribute fines of 7,500 to ten thousand shekels for each violation, but only under certain conditions such as after a warning or an unreasonable violation.

However, regular police officers will be able to continue distributing fines of NIS 5,000 for the violations, similar to the current situation.

Last week, Defense Minister Bnei Gantz sent a letter to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanding that the increase in fines be put to a vote in the Knesset, in accordance with the original outline agreed in the Cabinet almost two months ago.

"Failure to implement the Cabinet decision impairs our ability to fight disease, open up the economy and increase the enforcement tools at our disposal," Ganz said.

Despite his request, the outline was not submitted to the Knesset for approval, and the ultra-Orthodox factions estimated at the time that Gantz's letter came in response to Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, who accused him of "crossing a red line for political reasons" when he announced the establishment of a submarine investigation committee. .

The increase in fines is not aimed at the ultra-Orthodox public, but their representatives in the Knesset and the government oppose it, especially in light of the opening of most educational institutions in the ultra-Orthodox sector, boys and girls, even at a time when their opening was banned.

Also, the resistance came in the wake of underground events and weddings.
