Support organizations for Basque prisoners announced Monday, November 30 that they "

suspended

The suspension of the mobilization, "

a first

" according to the Artisans of Peace movement, comes a month after the parole of Frédéric "

Xistor

" Haramburu, 66 years old.

This ex-member of an ETA commando team, detained for 30 years and sentenced to life imprisonment, has obtained a house arrest measure.

Support organizations for prisoners, including the collective Bake Bidea (Way of Peace), which brings together elected officials, trade unionists and activists from the Basque Country, had planned a "

massive

"

action

of "

civil disobedience

" on December 19.

The date coincided with the 4th anniversary of the arrest in Louhossoa of five members of civil society, and the seizure of weapons from ETA, against the backdrop of the disarmament of the separatist organization, whose defendants wanted to be facilitators.

By suspending the mobilization of the 19th, Bake Bidea and the Artisans of Peace want to "

promote the important decisions which strengthen the current process

", declared in a press release Michel Berhocoirigoin, spokesperson for the Artisans, and one of the people questioned by Louhossoa in 2016. The recent release of Haramburu “

paves the way

” for the “

immediate

parole

of detainees Jakes Esnal or Ion Kepa Parot, who have spent 30 years in detention, or those ill, such as Ibon Fernandez Iradi, a- he added.

"

We want to open up the possibility of moving forward, we must close this file so that we do not pass this situation on to generations who have not lived through the conflict,

" he declared.

But civil disobedience could become topical again "

if the breach opened by this judgment (Haramburu) were to close,

" he added.

Bake Bidea and the Artisans of Peace maintained the large annual mobilization in January in support of the peace process.

These events, simultaneously in Bayonne and Bilbao, are very widely followed and had gathered in early 2020 more than 8,000 people in Bayonne, several tens of thousands in Bilbao.

For years, and the end of the armed struggle in 2011, Basque nationalist activists have made the release of ex-ETA detainees a priority, which dissolved in 2018.
