In the video: An investigation in Australia revealed that the special forces killed unarmed people in Afghanistan (Photo: Reuters)

Australia is demanding that China apologize after its official government account posted a fake photo showing an Australian soldier killing an Afghan child, amid a report in Australia revealing suspicions of war crimes committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has said that Beijing should be ashamed of sharing the "repulsive" picture.

The fabricated photo was released by Chinese Foreign Minister spokesman Lijian Zhao, which showed an Australian soldier with a blood-stained knife next to a child who was seen holding a idler.

According to reports not included in the Australian Ministry of Defense report, Australian elite force fighters killed two 14-year-old Afghan boys with knives.

However, the report found "credible evidence" of the illegal killings of 39 Afghan civilians and prisoners between 2009 and 2013 War "within the special forces.

It also emerged that veteran fighters encouraged the young men to shoot the prisoners to kill for the first time.

The findings provoked widespread condemnation in Australia, and they were handed over for police investigation on suspicion of war crimes.

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman tweeted that Beijing was "shocked" by the Australian military's actions, condemning them and demanding that those responsible be prosecuted.

Australia has asked Twitter - which is blocked in China itself - to remove the tweet, as it contains "disinformation".

The fabricated image

Morrison acknowledged that there was tension between the two countries, but added: "This is not how it is handled."

He warned Beijing that other countries around the world were watching its actions in relation to Australia.

Tensions between the countries began after Canberra called for an investigation into the origins of the corona virus, and its claims of Beijing's interference in local politics.

In recent months, China has imposed economic sanctions on Australia, including tariffs, on Australian products including wine and meat.

Australia calls this "economic coercion".

Earlier this month, the Chinese embassy in Australia released a list of 14 points on which it claims Australia is acting in a way that exacerbates relations.

This is partly due to the blocking of the Chinese media giant Wawi from bidding in the tender for the operation of the fifth generation and its statements in relation to Hong Kong, Taiwan and the persecution of the Uighur minority.

Australia insists it will not change its policy, and Morrison said today that Beijing continues to reject government requests for senior-level meetings.

The Prime Minister said that the fabricated image harms China's image in the eyes of the world.

"It's a fake picture and it's a terrible insult to our defense forces," he said.
