The district building yard has technically upgraded for winter maintenance and has acquired ice warning systems.

It's not the only innovation.

District

- After the thermometer showed clear minus degrees on Monday, the winter should stop by Freising for the first time this Tuesday: From the early morning hours of light snowfall is predicted.

The district of Freising is prepared for this.

“We are ready,” says Korbinian Hobmeier, head of the district building yard.

Five vehicles are available for winter service.

These are equipped with plow and wet salt spreader, which have a capacity between three and six tons and have an average spreading range of 28 to 40 kilometers.

"Thanks to modern technology, the winter service equipment can be attached within half an hour," explains Hobmeier.

"Filling with grit takes an average of five to ten minutes per vehicle." For questions relating to liability law, data recording of the routes is carried out - separated into clearing and spreading routes using GPS.

Winter service: Special sensors measure the temperature of the road

"There is a specific clearing and spreading plan for every vehicle," continues Hobmeier.

“The respective driver decides on site whether he has to clear or just grit.” A winter service route is usually cleared or gritted in one lane in two and a half to three and a half hours.

In addition, the district can, if necessary, fall back on three subcontractors who drive the district's own winter service equipment on private trucks.

The operations managers have recently upgraded the technology again, because the district has acquired two ice warning systems, Hobmeier said.

“Special sensors measure the temperature of the road surface and the air temperature.” In addition, a camera detects whether there is snow on the road.

The data can be called up online at any time.

Around 3500 tons of salt fit into the gritting halls

The district building yard now also has access to the values of the devices that the Freising State Building Authority uses on other routes.

The two ice warning systems are installed in Haindlfing at the radar station and in Haarbach in the Au municipal area.

“These are striking points where we often have problems with snow and black ice,” says Hobmeier.

The operator of the entire network is the Autobahn Directorate North Bavaria.

As every year, the gritting halls in the district's building yard are well filled with road salt.

They hold around 3500 tons.

From December to the end of March, on-call duty is organized in three shifts.

The building yard receives the current weather forecasts for the coming days from the German Weather Service several times a day.

The “weather scouts” decide what to do

Two “weather scouts” from the teams monitor the weather development at night.

“Based on their knowledge and experience, they decide whether, when and to what extent winter service is required,” says Hobmeier.

If necessary, they alert the colleagues on the team by mobile phone.

If there are no wintry road conditions at times, there is on-call duty from 3 a.m. to 10 p.m.

This is the framework of the legal clearing and scattered light.

In extreme winter road conditions, it can be used around the clock.

The road network for which the rural building yard is responsible has changed somewhat.

The Northeast Freising bypass was opened to traffic last Monday.

In the course of this, the route between Erlau and the entrance to Freising was stepped from the main road to the district road.

It is the other way around with the Moosburg western bypass.

The former county road became a state road in summer and is cleared and gritted accordingly by the state building authority.

As reported, the Freising construction yard is also equipped for winter operations.

1200 tons of salt were stored.

72 employees are ready.

In Corona times, skiing is becoming more and more of a political issue, and a winter sports ban is looming.

The district associations are already canceling the first courses and trips.

Corona is now also forcing the Viva Vita conference center to take a break.

After the conference and restaurant operations, the last offer will also be discontinued.
