Russia firmly condemned the assassination of Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh near Tehran last Friday, stressing that those behind it must be held accountable.
"We strongly condemn the killing of the scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh on November 27 in Iran ... and express our grave concern about the provocative nature of this terrorist act, which clearly aims to destabilize the situation and exacerbate the possibility of conflict in the region," a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The ministry added that regardless of who is behind this crime and who tries to use it for his political interests, they must bear responsibility for it.
She emphasized that the firm priority of the Russian Federation is the stability and security of the Middle East and the Gulf region ... and our efforts and initiatives aim to achieve this within the frameworks of the United Nations and other international arenas, as well as in our bilateral relations with the countries of the region, and we call on all parties to refrain from any qualified steps to escalate tension.
