Those who can no longer cope with their debts will find help at the Diakonie.

Their debt counseling is on hand.

She is dealing with more and more young people.

Ebersberg

- For 18 years, Carola Kaupel (55) has been advising Diakonie people who can no longer cope with their debts.

Now she is leaving the Diakonie at the end of the year.

She has looked after over 1000 clients and had over 3000 discussions.

“Some come once a year, others once a week,” remembers Kaupel, there is no routine.

People who have problems with their debts contact her and her colleagues Günther Reiser and Christine Stöger for an interview.

Then you look at the situation and first try to secure your existence.

Then it goes to budget planning, looking for financial help and possibly the initiation of insolvency proceedings.

"There are many misunderstandings"

“Many are afraid that they will go to jail because of their debts, that's nonsense,” says the counselor.

Others fear that bankruptcy proceedings will be monitored at every turn or that they could earn too much.

There are many misunderstandings that Kaupel and her colleagues resolve in the discussions.

There are always spontaneous hugs and tears of joy during the first conversation.

The relief is often just huge, says Kaupel.

Ikea bag full of unopened letters

“Many people bury their heads in the sand out of helplessness,” says Stöger.

When some then come with an Ikea bag full of unopened letters, most of them don't expect the bright spot that follows in the conversation.

Especially in the district, thanks to the low unemployment, it is even more unpleasant for many to come and ask for help.

"Many think that everyone is fine and that they alone would not get it right," said Stöger.

It is important to show people that they are not being judged and that they do not have to justify themselves when giving advice.

In the 18 years in which he was a consultant, Kaupel has seen many changes, such as clearing keys instead of flat-rate per case or new ways to secure accounts.

She is now also allowed to advise on bankruptcy proceedings, something that a lawyer had to clarify earlier.

It makes it easier for people to get into debt

“What I notice most is that more and more young people are coming to us,” she says.

It will be made easier for people to get into debt than before.

"Zero percent financing and free credit cards are advertised everywhere to stimulate the economy," said Stöger.

“Whether normal people or celebrities, debts can affect anyone,” says Reiser.

Advertising catalogs and the Internet also fuel the will to borrow, the consultants are certain.

The number of insolvencies will probably rise rapidly in the coming year, because they are still holding back as many applications as possible - currently around 70.

The reason for this is a pending change in the law to shorten the insolvency procedure from six to just three years until the remaining debt is discharged.

"We'd be stupid if we didn't advise our clients to wait," said Stöger.

Starting next year, Carola Kaupels Platz will take over Silvia Schlosser, who is moving internally from the outpatient living department to debt and insolvency advice.

She has "been a fan of social work since childhood," she says.

And Carola Kaupel encourages her successor: "You work in a beautiful rural district, you can even see the mountains during your lunch break".
