Algerian President Abd al-Majid Tavon, 75, was hospitalized about a month ago in a German hospital and was positively diagnosed with the corona virus, the lack of clarity about his medical condition causes uncertainty about the country's leadership.

On October 28, the presidential bureau said Tavon had been hospitalized in Germany to undergo "comprehensive medical examinations."

He was transferred from a facility in the Algerian capital days after he went into isolation after some of his aides were found positive for the virus.

His last tweet on his Twitter account was on October 24, and since then his bureau has kept updating on his health condition.

A day before his transfer to Germany, his bureau said his health was not a cause for concern, but a week later announced he had contracted the virus.

On November 8, it was reported that he was in the process of completing the treatment and that his health condition was constantly improving, and a week later it was reported that al-Majid Taabun had completed the treatment and underwent medical examinations according to the protocol.

Since then, there has been a thunderous silence, with the exception of a report by the official news agency last week that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had sent a letter of congratulations on her speedy recovery.

The scant information and lack of any photocopied documentation of the president has raised speculation among citizens at a time when the country is experiencing a re-emergence of the virus.

More than 2,000 people have died and 80,000 have been diagnosed with the virus in the North African country.

For many in Algeria, recent developments are reminiscent of the government vacuum created after the hospitalization of former President 'Abd al-Aziz Botflika.

The veteran leader, who resigned in April last year after weeks of mass demonstrations against his intention to run for a fifth term, suffered a stroke in early 2013 and was hospitalized outside the country for about three months.

Muhammad Hanad, an Algerian political science expert, told AFP that his prolonged absence due to illness, along with a "protocol" of providing vague information, "indicate that the president is very ill."

He said the problem was created as a result of an "unnecessary complication" by the authorities, and not due to the disease itself.

He noted the possibility of enacting Article 102 of the Constitution, designed to prevent a constitutional crisis through a temporary imprisonment of the President for a period of up to 45 days, and then through his resignation.

In such a case, the interim president of the Senate - 89-year-old Salah Gavagil, who participated in the war of independence against France, will be the interim president until new elections.

Due to his illness, there was apparently no wisdom in the country at the time of the November 1 referendum, which passed constitutional changes designed to bury the protest movement and strengthen the president, who was elected after the lowest turnout ever in the December election.
