When the defense and health systems are already preparing for a third closure, the education system is not left behind either.

In recent months, tremendous efforts have been made to close the gaps, which caught the system unprepared in the first closure and were not completed until the second closure.

In recent months, the education system has stretched its capabilities to the limit in this context, in an attempt to deal with the current situation.

At the urging of the Minister in charge, Yoav Galant, more than 60,000 computers have already been distributed, although the goal is to distribute about 150,000 computers with Internet access, which also do not necessarily meet the entire shortage of students.

In addition, about 100,000 teachers have been trained in technological and pedagogical online teaching, but about half of the teachers.

Above all, the system is doing everything in its power to provide emotional responses to affected students, but the effort is expected to take months.

"Parental supervision and enforcement"

As a result, Galant is expected to fight the closure of the education system for the third time.

"The disease slips into the education system and does not come from it," he said today (Monday).

According to him, "If there is no Corona in the neighborhood, there will also be no Corona in the school because it is a local thing, unlike a mall or a restaurant. I intend to fight that there is no reason to close a school in the south without Corona, just because there is an outbreak in the north. "It has control and monitoring over every kindergarten or school. There is supervision, control and enforcement by parents, principals and teachers, and they take care of it. In 99 percent of the kindergartens and in 90 percent of the schools there is no morbidity."

But as we have already seen, sometimes decisions are made over the head of the system - leaving managers to deal with them.

"In the event of a third closure, students will be harmed twice," warns Yoav Frieden, co-chair of leaders, the organization of school principals and the principal of Urban A High School for the Arts in Tel Aviv.

"First and foremost," he warns, "all students in the education system will be harmed in terms of socio-emotional responses. In addition, high school students will be harmed when it comes to their matriculation exams."

According to Frieden, as part of the preparations for the closures that have taken place and those that may yet come, school principals have conducted significant learning processes, but these alone are not enough.

"The matriculation system must be changed and the amount of material studied must be reduced, otherwise the harm to students will be significant," Frieden said. "Principals and teachers promoted distance learning. Yes, there was effective online learning, invest in materials, content and more. "More trust in principals that processes in schools need to be compatible with the community in which they are located. It can't be done with sweeping guidelines and generic outlines."

Disintegration of learning habits

In the event of a third closure, students may return home at once, as was the case in the second closure.

Another possibility is that they will decide to close only the upper classes on the grounds that they contribute the most to the disease.

In any case, the whole ship will be rocked back again, and the students will return to study from the houses in front of the screen.

"We are already seeing a disintegration of learning habits, social difficulties, a decline in loneliness and difficult moods. The very weak are even weaker during this period," says Dalit Stauber, former director general of the Ministry of Education.

She believes that "even in a state of closure, immediate action should be taken to return students to schools, as many of them have not been studying in educational institutions since March, except for a few weeks."

In a study conducted by the Israel Democracy Institute, a model was developed designed to help lead the necessary changes in the system and succeed in the Corona period.

"There should be clear goals, because students can not continue to sit at home," Stauber clarifies and continues, "Let us remember that in the early years of the State of Israel they studied in two shifts, and this measure can also be implemented. All this while sharing a variety of experts and field personnel (currently excluded) and flexible planning in accordance with the changing needs. "

"Violation of public trust"

Stauber, who conducted the study ahead of the Eli Horowitz Conference on Economics and Society on March 16-14, added a rather pessimistic prophecy: "If the system does not change its ways, it will severely damage public trust in the public education system, lose its relevance and even erode its place As a leading value in the country. "

According to Stauber, "In a situation of paralysis in the education system, there is severe harm to the weaker populations and a danger to the fabric of Israeli society."

The former director general of the ministry claims, in addition to the fact that academic success is not a guarantee that there will be no difficulties in other aspects of school and home life, among elementary, middle and high school students.

"Students, even strong ones, can develop emotional and social difficulties, so huge budgets will be required over the years to address the gaps and difficulties that are born," Stauber observes.
