A big anniversary celebration was not possible due to the corona restrictions, and so the obesity self-help group Weilheim-Schongau celebrated its tenth anniversary unnoticed by the public.

Erika Huber from the management team is pleased that six members took part in the “Run against Leukemia” around Lake Dietlhofer in aid of the José Carreras Foundation.

District

- The obesity group offers a wide range of help for overweight people throughout the year.

“Because a lot is easier together,” says Erika Huber.

Until the outbreak of the pandemic, there were regular meetings or action Saturdays with children and friends.

Every third young person is overweight

According to scientific studies, the tendency to become very overweight, i.e. obese (adiposity), is increasing, especially in men.

It is alarming that young adults in particular are getting fatter: every third young person is overweight, and at least five percent of children and young people are even obese.

Psychological factors also have an influence

There are many reasons for this: Often several are linked, such as a hormonal disorder or genetic factors.

Psychological factors also have an influence - for example in the case of loneliness, defeat, loss of partner or job, as well as in the course of a tangible depression.

"Food can then play the role of comforting the soul," says Huber.

"You sweeten all the unpleasant things of everyday life or literally eat worries into yourself."

Exchange in a confidential atmosphere

In the self-help group, experiences and valuable tips can be exchanged in a confidential atmosphere.

“We also do a lot of great things together,” says Huber of excursions, line dance workshops and herb hikes.

Bowling, stand-up paddling, Nordic walking and cooking together are also part of the varied program.

In addition, in Corona times, group members increasingly use social media to exchange ideas.

One indicator of obesity is the so-called "body mass index" (BMI).

From a BMI of 25, one speaks of a slight obesity, the so-called pre-obesity.

A BMI of 30 means obesity.

The BMI is calculated by dividing your body weight by the square of your height in meters.

Susceptible to secondary diseases such as heart and circulatory diseases, arteriosclerosis, joint diseases or venous disorders

Studies show: Overweight people are not only exposed to high levels of psychosocial distress.

They are also more prone to secondary diseases such as heart and circulatory diseases, arteriosclerosis, joint diseases or venous diseases.

Scientific findings over the past few years have fundamentally changed the understanding of how obesity develops.

Obesity is now classified as a chronic disease, similar to type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

And: It shows a tendency towards repeated relapses; if left untreated, it usually worsens over time.

It is characterized by abnormal, excessive accumulation of body fat, which can lead to further diseases.
