The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, reaffirmed Syria's principled and firm stance in support of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and establish their independent state on their entire national territory, with Jerusalem as its capital, while ensuring the right of refugees to return to their homes.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Committee for the Exercise of the Palestinian People’s Inalienable Rights, Ambassador Sheikh Ning in New York on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Dr. Al-Miqdad said: “I would like, at the outset, to extend my great thanks and appreciation to you for your efforts to hold an important annual meeting, which is the International Day of Solidarity with The Palestinian people, despite the restrictions imposed by the spread of the new Corona virus in the form of these UN meetings and with your continued concern for the Palestinian cause and the suffering of its people remain alive in the minds of all member states of the United Nations.

Dr. Al-Miqdad expressed his appreciation for the great efforts made by the committee to implement the international legitimacy decisions related to the Palestinian issue, which the Syrian Arab Republic considers its central cause in order to expose the practices of the Israeli occupation against the Palestinian people.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates reaffirmed the Syrian Arab Republic’s principled and steadfast position in support of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and establish their independent state on the entirety of their national territory, with Jerusalem as its capital, while ensuring the right of refugees to return to their homes in accordance with General Assembly Resolution 194 of 1948, which is a right that is not subject to statute of limitations. Subject to negotiation or concession based on international law, United Nations resolutions and all relevant international charters and instruments.

Minister Al-Miqdad emphasized that the Israeli settlement colonization in the occupied Arab lands and the Israeli practices that accompanied the destruction of occupied villages and cities and the displacement of their inhabitants to replace Israeli settlers in their place formed the essence of the policy pursued by the Israeli occupation authorities since the first day of their occupation of Palestine and the Syrian Arab Golan, and that policy was accompanied by arbitrary, racist practices and gross violations. And systematized all human rights for the Palestinians and Syrians living in those occupied Arab lands, some of which amount to war crimes such as forcible transfer of residents, demolition of homes, confiscation of lands and properties, and theft of natural materials.

Minister Al-Miqdad pointed out that the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is gaining this year a special importance in light of the serious developments that threaten the Palestinian cause.

Dr. Al-Miqdad pointed out that despite the relevant UN decisions, no progress has been made by the international community in ending the Israeli occupation of Arab lands, and the Israeli occupation authorities have not been held accountable for their occupation, violations and contempt for the rules of international law and the United Nations Charter and those decisions because of the protection umbrella it provides. Some of the permanent members of the Security Council, especially the United States of America, whose level of support under President Trump's administration has reached an unprecedented level with the so-called "Deal of the Century", which is part of the continuous attempts by successive American administrations and the Israeli occupation authorities to liquidate the Palestinian issue and ignore international legitimacy and abort their decisions. Concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict, it constituted a major factor in accelerating the plans of the Israeli occupation and its illegal annexation of East Jerusalem, the occupied Syrian Golan and large parts of the West Bank, in clear violation of international law, the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates affirmed the Syrian Arab Republic’s rejection and condemnation of the so-called “deal of the century” and war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by “Israel”, the occupying power in the occupied Palestinian territories, and the countries supporting it bear responsibility and consequences for the continuation of these crimes, and any decisions, measures or deals are considered inconsistent. With the relevant United Nations resolutions and do not preserve the established Palestinian rights are rejected in form and content and are not viable at all.

Dr. Al-Miqdad concluded his message by saying: I would like to address, through your esteemed forum, the member states of the United Nations and urge them to shoulder their responsibilities towards the plight of the Palestinian people and to take concrete and serious steps to confront the atrocity of the Israeli occupation and hold the occupying power accountable for its systematic violations and not recognize any Measures that it has taken and will take to perpetuate its occupation of Arab lands and to exert pressure on it to end its unjust siege imposed on the Palestinian people in Gaza and to end the occupation by "Israel" of Arab lands and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions, foremost among which are Security Council Resolutions No. 242, No. 338 and No. 497.
