(CNN) -

NBC Universal apologized to Selena Gomez after one of their newer shows teased her kidney transplant.

The joke referring to Gomez's health problems appeared during the sixth episode of Peacock's "Saved by the Bell" remake.

“I know for sure that Selena Gomez's kidney donor was Justin Bieber's mom.

God, I wish I had my phone so I could test it, ”says one student.

In another scene, graffiti on a wall behind the students reads, "Does Selena Gomez even have a kidney?"

The episode generated rejection on social networks, where many of Selena Gomez's followers came to her defense.

"We apologize," NBC said in a statement sent to CNN on Monday.

“It was never our intention to take Selena's health lightly.

We have been in contact with his team and will make a donation to his charity, the Selena Gomez Fund for Lupus Research at the University of Southern California, "he added.

CNN has reached out to representatives for Gomez for comment.

Gomez revealed in 2017 that she had the transplant after battling lupus for several years.

She received the kidney from her best friend, Francia Raisa, who referred to the incident and the subsequent apology on Twitter.

"We appreciate the apology, but let's not forget the donors who were potentially offended and underappreciated by the spray paint written on the wall," he wrote.
