Almost three years ago the senior moved from Munich, where he had lived for many years, to a senior citizens' home in Unterhaching.
Bernhard Merklein will be 73 years old today, Wednesday.
Today he likes to sit on the balcony.
It used to be different, he always had a lot to do.
In his younger years he was always busy, first as a baker, later as a driver and father of three children of his own and three children by marriage.
Today, as soon as the weather permits, he likes to sit out on the balcony.
Then he smokes a cigarette or two there and watches the world.
Bernhard Merklein would like training pants in size 50 or M. He doesn't care about color or pattern, he says.
But if FC Bayern were on it, football fan Bernhard Merklein would certainly have no objection.
