The United States is entering the final month of the year in hopes of soon getting approval for vaccines promising the corona virus, after 4.2 million new cases were diagnosed in the country in November, more than twice as many as in October.

This is partly because many Americans still refuse to wear masks and continue to congregate contrary to expert opinion, even during Thanksgiving mentioned at the weekend.

The policy of outgoing US President Donald Trump is based primarily on the beginning of the use of vaccines, which may receive FDA approval on Dec. 10.

The Food and Drug Administration will then discuss the emergency application filed by Pfizer, and a week later that of Modern.

If they get approved, first Americans will be able to get vaccinated before the end of 2020, though extensive immunization is only expected in a few months.

By June, about 300 million vaccines will be available.

Other international companies, such as Astraznica and Johnson & Johnson, are also developing vaccines.

This has led some members of the Trump administration's "record-breaking operation" to estimate that the country will be immunized by June.

"100% of Americans who want to be vaccinated will be vaccinated by then (June). We will have more than 300 million vaccine doses for the American public accordingly," Paul Ostrovsky, director of supply, production and distribution of the vaccine program, told MSNBC yesterday.

Meanwhile, senior US health officials are urging citizens to heed their recommendations and stop the virus that killed more than 36,000 people in November.

In addition, last month saw a record number of people hospitalized with the virus, with close to 93,000 last Sunday, according to Reuters data.

The widespread consequences of the epidemic led the Miriam-Webster dictionary to choose the word "epidemic" as the word of the year, after it won the most searches in the dictionary.

"Sometimes, one word defines an era, and it happened in that extraordinary year - and unusually hard," the dictionary publisher said.

Even after a week in which more than 10,000 people died and more than 1.1 million people were diagnosed positive for the virus, Trump remains focused on his desperate attempt to turn the presidential election results in which he lost to Joe Biden.

The president-elect promised to prioritize the fight against the plague when he entered the White House on January 20, and promised to heed the experts' advice.

Without a cohesive document from the federal government, states issue new or renewed restrictions on business and social activity.

The California governor said he may renew the order to stay in homes in the coming days, after the number of inpatients on intensive care is on track to reach full state occupancy by mid-month - with no change in public health states or residents.

"The red flags are flying in the air," Democratic Gov. Gwyn Newsam told reporters online.

"If this trend continues, we will take dramatic, even drastic, steps."
