The destruction of the Amazon forest in Brazil skyrocketed to a 12-year high in 2020 following the weakening of environmental regulations under the rule of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro - government figures released yesterday (Monday) showed.

According to the Brazilian National Space Center, the world's largest rainforest growth rate rose 9.5 percent last year to 11,088 square kilometers - seven times the size of London, for example. The numbers mean Brazil will miss its own target, set In a law against climate change in 2009, to reduce the destruction of the Amazon to 3,900 square kilometers per year.

The implications for this are not set out in law, but the government may face lawsuits.

The official data is based on a comparison of satellite images from the end of July this year to those from the beginning of August last year.

The dates befit the dry season of the Amazon, when there are fewer clouds that can disrupt the calculations.

The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, and is essential for halting extreme climate change due to the enormous amount of carbon dioxide it absorbs.

In 2018, the year before Bolsonaro took office, 7,536 km were destroyed.

However, the government notes that the data of the past year are actually showing progress in the fight against deforestation, as they were much lower than those of 2019, when there was a 34% increase.

"While we are not here to celebrate this, it shows that our efforts are bearing fruit," said Vice President Hamilton Murray, of the Space Agency's headquarters in the suburbs of Sao Paulo.

Bolsonaro has weakened the Environmental Protection Agency and called for the expansion of agriculture and mining in the Amazon region, claiming it will lift him out of poverty.

Proponents of environmental conservation say it strengthens agriculture, mining and taking over illegal land in the forest.

"The data show Bolsonaro's plan is working," the organization said in a statement.

The main reaction of Bolsonaro to the cries of the world for the destruction of the forest was the sending of the army, which was first deployed last year and is expected to remain in the area until April.

The vice president said the government is planning further steps after the end of military operations, without elaborating.

He added that the government must work within its budget limits.

According to the space agency, the destruction of the Amazon decreased between July and September compared to last year, but rose again in October.

Furious at both.

Leaders in Europe, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, have sharply criticized Brazil, claiming it is not doing enough to protect the forest.

Joe Biden's election as President of the United States has raised the possibility that Washington will also increase pressure on Brazil.

Biden said in one of the presidential confrontations that the world should offer Brazil money to fund efforts to stop deforestation, and threatened economic sanctions against it.

His remarks drew harsh criticism from Bolsonaro, who said it was a threat to Brazil's sovereignty.

"Let's remember that the (American) future president knows our country," Murray said of Biden.

"He is someone we will have a clean dialogue with at some point without significant issues."
