Belgian police officers warned about 20 people on Friday evening who were celebrating a sex party in Brussels despite the current Corona restrictions.

Among the guests was a Hungarian MP from the ruling Fidesz party.

The celebration was reportedly held in an apartment above a bar in downtown Brussels, not far from a police station.

Many of the mostly male guests were therefore naked when they were arrested.

In addition, the police are said to have found drugs.

According to the police, "around 20 people were warned for non-compliance with health measures."

"I deeply regret the violation of the Covid-19 restrictions, it was irresponsible"

Among the guests were reportedly an MEP and several diplomats.

The MP is said to have tried to escape through a window when the officials arrived.

He is said to have injured himself and then referred to his diplomatic immunity as a member of parliament.

It was the Hungarian József Szájer, as the 59-year-old has now confirmed himself.

The public prosecutor's office only confirmed the attempt to escape with the initials "SJ" and the date of birth 1961. Drugs were also found in the victim's backpack.

"I was there," admitted Szájer.

"According to the police, they found an ecstasy pill, but it wasn't mine." He did not take any drugs.

"I deeply regret the violation of the Covid-19 restrictions, it was irresponsible."

Two days after the incident - and before it became known - Szájer surprisingly announced on Sunday that he would resign as a member of the European Parliament with effect from December 31.

According to media reports, his resignation is before the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli.

Szájer said he apologized to his family, colleagues and voters.

Szájer has been a member of the EU Parliament since 2004 and is a founding member of the national conservative Fidesz party, of which Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is a member.

Szájer is considered to be his confidante and mouthpiece of European politics.

The party stands for an increasingly nationalist and authoritarian course.

It comes under repeated criticism, among other things, because of the undermining of the rights of sexual minorities.

Szájer himself had made negative comments about homosexuals several times in the past.

He is married to a lawyer who ran the Hungarian judicial office.

The participants in the sex party violated several rules to combat the corona pandemic.

There is a curfew in Brussels between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

In addition, bars and restaurants have to remain closed until mid-January, meetings of more than four people are prohibited.

According to the AFP news agency, Szájer announced that he would pay the fine.

According to the public prosecutor's office, the participants of the party face a fine of 250 euros and the organizers up to 750 euros.

The authorities are also investigating Szájer for drug possession - "after parliamentary immunity has been lifted."
