A highly pathogenic H5 avian flu broke out in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The Center for Food Safety instructed the industry to suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products (including poultry eggs) from the area to protect the health of the local public.

A spokesperson for the Center for Food Safety said: "The center has contacted the Japanese authorities regarding the incident, and will continue to closely monitor the news about the outbreak of avian influenza from the World Animal Health Organization and relevant authorities, and take appropriate actions in response to the development of the local epidemic."

This is at least the third time in Hong Kong within a month that the import of Japanese poultry eggs has been suspended.

The Food Safety Center pointed out successively on the 5th and 26th of last month that in response to the outbreak of H5 avian influenza in Kagawa and Hyogo prefectures, Japan, it instructed the industry to suspend imports of poultry and poultry products from the region.

According to the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported about 50 tonnes of chilled poultry meat, about 4,300 tonnes of frozen poultry meat and about 200 million poultry eggs from Japan in the first nine months of this year.
