Two pedestrians were killed today (Tuesday) and several other people were injured when a vehicle hit a sidewalk in the western German city of Trier, police said.
Police arrested the offending driver, and the motive for the incident is still unknown.
"We arrested one person, one car was secured. Two people were killed, according to preliminary information. Please continue to avoid reaching the city center," the local police wrote on their Twitter account.
Germany and other European countries are on high alert, following a series of terrorist attacks last month in France and Austria, and ahead of Christmas.
A local newspaper reported from an eyewitness that he saw a black Range Rover driving fast, and people being thrown into the air.
The city center was closed to traffic, and helicopters circled the city skies.
The mayor quickly arrived at the scene.
