Defense Minister Benny Gantz's Blue-White alliance, which is part of the unity government in Israel, wants to join an opposition proposal to dissolve parliament.

His party, which ruled in a coalition with the Likud of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, would "vote tomorrow for the dissolution of parliament," announced Gantz in a televised address on Tuesday evening.

The move could result in Israel's fourth general election in two years.

However, Wednesday's vote is only a first stage.

Two more readings in the Knesset would be necessary before parliament could be dissolved.

Recently there had been increasing tensions within the governing coalition.

In Israel, before Netanyahu and Gantz agreed on a government alliance in April, there had been three parliamentary elections within a year.

If the current governing coalition consisting of Netanyahu's Likud and Gantz's blue-white alliance breaks up, the country faces another political crisis.
