The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today that a vehicle belonging to the Russian diplomatic mission in Afghanistan was hit by an improvised explosive device in the capital, Kabul, slightly wounding its crew.
The RIA Novosti news agency quoted a statement issued by the ministry’s spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, as saying that "the explosion occurred while the car was passing near the Russian embassy compound," noting that the mission's personnel in the car were lightly bruised.
The statement indicated that the attack targeted a vehicle belonging to the Afghan security forces that was traveling in front of the Russian diplomatic vehicle, without ruling out the possibility of the attack being committed against Russian citizens as well.
The statement called on the Afghan side to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and take all possible measures to ensure the security of representatives of the Russian missions in Afghanistan, pointing out that the Russian embassy in Kabul is taking additional steps aimed at enhancing the safety of the diplomatic mission's staff and property.
