The bill is exorbitant.
The total cost of the SNCF for taxpayers, via state and regional subsidies, reached 12.9 billion euros in 2019, according to a note from François Ecalle, founder of the fipeco.fr site and former magistrate of the Court of Auditors, published in preview by
Le Figaro
.
This addition, which amounted to 14.4 billion in 2018, does not, of course, include the price to be paid for the purchase of train tickets.
"For lots of reasons, SNCF's costs are too high"
, comments the public finance expert.

To arrive at these 12.9 billion, François Ecalle first assesses the operating expenses.
The net cost to taxpayers amounted to 5.3 billion euros, or 22% of the total costs.
This cost relates more specifically to the sale of services by SNCF to regional authorities organizing local transport.
"
The regions do not have a choice of suppliers, which explains these high prices
", explains François.
