Hope for new vaccines against corona is growing.

Many citizens and politicians would like it to happen as quickly as possible.

But fast alone is not the solution, writes our commentator Christian Deutschländer, Head of Politics and Background at Münchner Merkur.

Of course, nothing is more understandable than the fervent hope that it will rain the vaccine like manna from heaven as soon as possible.

Nonetheless, in this phase of the pandemic, when hope is growing daily, caution and patience are extremely important - when approving the vaccines and distributing them.

Mistakes can be made that will poison society for years.

Market approval in Europe has to be quick, but not hasty.

Bureaucracy procedures need to be shortened, but all testing standards must remain high as promised.

It is tricky when states assume liability for a vaccine that has never been approved of this type.

And at least the parliaments must have insight into the billions of dollars and previously secret supply contracts before the first dose is injected.

Anyone who messes up with auditing and transparency feeds the next giant wave of conspiracy theories.

It's already rolling.

Compulsory vaccination would be dangerous - keep your hands off it!

It is also wise that the first row in German politics does not even think about compulsory vaccinations.

Because it would weld the cautious, who want to wait a few months for possible side effects, and the vaccine opponents, who are usually not politically radicalized, together with corona deniers and their zealous companions from extremist milieus.

And because it won't be necessary to achieve a 60 percent vaccination rate.

The majority of people want to go on vacation, fly, attend major events again - not in Germany, but abroad this will often be associated with proof of vaccination or a negative test.

This pressure will take care of some things by itself without making any obligations.
