Israel is encouraged by the decision of the Pharmaceutical and Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority (MHRA) to approve today (Wednesday) the new vaccine against the coronary virus from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, but is still waiting for the complementary results and full safety data of the trial, which will be presented to the scientific community.

In any case, the decision to approve the vaccine in Israel will come only after a decision by the US regulator, the FDA, although the Ministry of Health clarifies that the decision on the matter will be made independently, regardless of the world's leading authorities.

"Israel is an independent regulatory authority, any vaccine given in the country must be approved by the Ministry of Health," it said.

The UK is the first country in the world to approve Pfizer's vaccine for use, even before the United States and the European Union - and that the vaccine will be available for use as early as next week.

In the United States, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to discuss the company's request for an emergency permit in about a week.

However, the EU, from which Britain withdrew earlier this year had warned against approving the vaccines too soon, and its regulatory body said it would make a decision only on 29 December.

The decision in Israel will be made independently.

Dr Erez Gerty, an immunologist at the Davidson Institute for Science Education, explained to Walla! NEWS that "the English authorities are very serious and trustworthy", saying that following the Brexit and their disengagement from Europe they may have been more agile than the EU as well as the US the approval of the emergency.

"England snatched a mortal blow the previous wave and the current wave also affected, she wants to get it done and everybody understands effective vaccine is the only way to get there," said Dr. Gerti.

"I guess there are no corner circles, in the end everyone is exposed to the same information and everyone examines it, and there are a lot of scientists who look at the research with seven eyes."

First in the world: Britain approves use of Pfizer's vaccine for corona

Gerty added that it is of utmost importance to be extra careful and avoid mistakes when approving a vaccine, due to the potential to undermine the confidence of the vaccinated public.

"It is clear to everyone that if there are mistakes, public confidence will be damaged and he will not be vaccinated even with safer vaccines," he said.

He said Israel is still awaiting US approval for the vaccine to be sure.

"The FDA will hold the hearing next week, so the British decision is not critical for Israel because the vaccines have not yet arrived in the country," he explained.

"It is important to remember that what stands in the way are the complications of the disease and its consequences, which in almost every scenario are much more severe."

Pfizer's vaccine will be approved by the FDA on December 10, and a week later it will be tested by the European Authority.

To increase public confidence in vaccines, Americans have stated that the process will be transparent and public.

However, the busy regulation could cause them to lag behind, while the British will already start vaccinating their citizens.

Comparison of corona vaccines

Pfizer has an agreement signed with Israel, according to which eight million vaccine doses will be provided, which will be given to about four million citizens, with each vaccinated person receiving two vaccine doses.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the first vaccines will arrive in early 2021, but this clause states in the agreement that the vaccines will arrive "according to the circumstances", ie: Pfizer is committed to Israel by the end of 2021, but not committed to the date it starts delivering the goods.

In addition to Pfizer, Israel has also signed a vaccine supply agreement with a modern company that has developed a vaccine with a similar technology, and the British company Astraznica.

The acquisition of the "Spontic 5" vaccine from Russia is also expected, along with the continued development of the Israel vaccine at the Biological Institute in Ness Ziona.

The agreements with Pfizer and Moderna are held in parallel and not at each other's expense, so that in fact Israel will receive the vaccine from the two major companies.

This means that even if Pfizer can provide only a limited amount of vaccines in early 2021, the Ministry of Health hopes that Moderna, which recently announced an effectiveness of 94.5%, will be able to supplement the shortcomings and provide more vaccines to Israel.

Pfizer's vaccine does not contain the active virus that causes the disease but uses a small part of its genetic material, called mRNA.

This is a scientific approach originally developed to fight cancer.

The vaccine causes the immune system to produce antibodies that attack the prickly protein - which, among other things, gives the corona virus its unique and recognizable form, but it is also the one that allows the virus to penetrate the body's cells that it attacks.
