An explosion shook homes in and around Onondaga County, New York, Wednesday afternoon.
The din rattled the windows of the houses and
left residents dumbfounded and wondering what could have caused the mysterious noise
.
Some feared that it was a gas explosion.
“I just felt an explosion that shook our entire house in Syracuse.
I hope everyone is safe, ”Roger Misso, a former congressional candidate, tweeted.
Many people also called 911,
alarmed by the mysterious explosion, reported Syracuse.com.

"It was heard so loud and it shook my house completely, after checking that a tree had not fallen on my roof, the next thing I thought was of a meteorite," wrote another user of that social network.
For Robert Lunsford, an expert from the American Meteor Society consulted by Syracuse.com, it
is most likely that it was a meteor
that exploded while passing through Earth's atmosphere.
There were sightings of the phenomenon for miles around, including in neighboring Canada.
The flash was so powerful that it was visible at noon, when sunlight is at its brightest, which is unusual, the expert said.

Cameras located atop the CN Tower in downtown Toronto, Canada,
recorded a brilliant flash over Niagara
that lit up the sky.
"This must have been a big one
," Lunsford told the outlet.
“It has to be a very large piece of rock to survive.
