The Association for Geriatrics in Israel warned today (Wednesday) that if the state does not expand its institutions soon, most geriatric hospitals will be forced to close their doors from next Sunday and will not accept new patients.

With the outbreak of the Corona crisis, the Ministry of Health asked the geriatric medical centers to act in accordance with the temporary order, and to establish corona wards to take care of hospitalizing the elderly who fell ill in the Corona, while promising budgetary indemnification.

The directors of the centers acted quickly and set up the corona wards as requested, but the Ministry of Health failed to keep its promises to transfer proper budgets to the corona wards.

Currently, about 4,000 elderly people are hospitalized in geriatric hospitals and nursing homes around the country, of which about 700 are respiratory patients.

Many geriatric institutions suffer from a lack of adequate financial resources that have exacerbated, and a shortage of manpower needed to protect tenants ’lives during the corona crisis.

Geriatric institutions in Israel constitute the last protective wall against the collapse of the public hospital system, and their flooding of geriatric patients that will not allow the admission of patients from the general public.

The Geriatrics Association in Israel represents about one hundred nursing homes and geriatric medical centers throughout the country, and was established last February.

The association approached the Ministry of Health in an attempt to produce a dialogue and response tailored to the needs of the tenants as it emerges from reality, but the Ministry of Health did not provide the required responses.

The association demands that the state compare the conditions of geriatric hospitals to the conditions of general hospitals.

However, until these moments, conditions and guidelines have not yet been formulated that are in line with reality and allow institutions to receive the budgets in a manner appropriate to the crisis.

Eran Shmueli, director general of the Association for Geriatrics in Israel, attacked the conduct of the Ministry of Health, saying that "the State of Israel does not need a third corona wave to bring about the collapse of the national hospital system, the Ministry of Health does it itself." Geriatric patients open corona wards with a full commitment to funding.

Unfortunately, he is now shirking this responsibility, and imposing it on the health funds in turn, judging themselves and not paying according to the rates set by the ministry. "

Shmueli clarified that" in view of the helplessness of the Ministry of Health Acceptance of the new patients. "

Boris Levin, CEO of the Golden Care Geriatric Medical Center and a member of the Geriatrics Association in Israel, said that "all parties believed that the state would pay, but this did not happen and the debts increased until they reached impossible dimensions." NIS 10 million.

The current situation is that we can not pay salaries next week.

"" In this situation, about a thousand workers will not receive their salaries, "Levin clarified. Optimal care for existing patients. "

Tal Turgeman, director of Beit Hadar in Ashdod, spoke about major shortages of equipment." There is a shortage of medical equipment such as gloves.

We buy pallets of gloves while on ships on their way to Israel, spend millions of shekels on equipment and do eighths in the air to ensure the health of the elderly. "
