Hungary: sex scandal over Fidesz MP József Szájer

2020-12-03T07:34:12.247Z

In Brussels, a Hungarian MP was caught in an orgy with naked men. The problem with it: There is a corona lockdown - and the politician is considered a national-conservative thought leader.

Party-goer József Szájer: Had drugs in his backpack - and probably not just national conservative ideas in mind

In his desperation, József Szájer hung himself out of the window and down the gutter.

He was probably hasty and only scantily clad, and the police found drugs in his backpack.

Residents had alerted the law enforcement officers, because noise had been heard last Friday evening from the apartment above a bar on Brussels' Rue des Pierres.

So the officers went out and blew up the party with around two dozen guests, most of them men, most of them naked.

The fact that a member of parliament elected by the people goes to an orgy in his spare time is initially up to him.

Szájer has to explain this to his wife, Tünde Hando is a judge at the Constitutional Court in Budapest.

It's stupid when lockdown rules still apply.

A maximum of four people are allowed to meet in Brussels.

Politicians should be role models.

And it becomes extremely embarrassing when it turns out that the person caught is a nationally conservative Fidesz man, someone who teaches his compatriots that marriage is sacred and homosexuality reprehensible.

The fact that his party has introduced extremely restrictive drug laws in Hungary hardly matters any more.

Drug possession fine

After the unsuccessful attempt to escape, the police accompanied Szájer home, where he was able to identify himself with a diplomatic passport.

Initially there was a warning, but there is a risk of a fine of 250 euros, the public prosecutor's office is investigating drug possession.

Szájer resigned as MP on Sunday.

"On behalf of our entire political community, we would like to thank József Szájer, who has made a significant contribution to Hungarian bourgeois conservatism and Christian democracy being able to take their rightful place in the European political scene," his party posted a somewhat cumbersome message in parting .

And that's not at all an exaggeration: Szajer, 59 years old, is one of the founding members of Fidesz, and is considered a confidante of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

He himself boasts that he drafted the new Hungarian constitution, which Fidesz urgently pushed through in 2011, on his tablet on the plane between Brussels and Budapest.

Among other things, it contains an appeal to Christianity and stipulates that marriage must be the union of man and woman.

This regulation prevents same-sex partnerships from being legally equated in Hungary.

Scandal hits Fidesz at an inopportune moment

The fact that Szajer of all people shows up at such a party seems clichéd.

The biggest haters of gays may be some themselves.

In addition, Fidesz recently stepped up its pace towards the LGBT community.

An amendment to the constitution is intended to stipulate that "the mother is a woman and the father a man", making the recognition of transgender people much more difficult.

You just have to protect children from "new, modern ideological trends in the western world", after all, these endanger a "healthy development", so the reasoning.

The Szájer scandal hits Fidesz at an inopportune moment.

The country, together with Poland, has just blocked the European budget for the next few years and billions in corona aid for the entire EU.

Hungary has thus made itself an outsider in the EU - even though the approval rates for membership in the alliance are consistently high.

The party has already seen that voters could lose patience with the Fidesz party, which is used to victory.

In 2018 a sex scandal surrounding the mayor of Györ was uncovered.

Film footage showed Zsolt Borkai having sex with prostitutes on a yacht in the Mediterranean.

In the local elections in October 2019, Fidesz suffered heavy losses - and even lost the capital to the opposition.
