Schulz, 64, can look back on a long political career. After years in local politics, he was a member of the European Parliament from 1994 to 2017, the last five years of which as President. In the 2017 federal election, he ran for the
SPD
as a candidate for chancellor, now as party chairman.
The initial »Schulz effect«, which catapulted the Social Democrats upwards in the polls, was soon followed by disillusionment.
With 20.5 percent, the SPD achieved the worst result in post-war history in the elections.
In February 2018, Schulz resigned from the party leadership.
He is a member of the Bundestag and is to take over the chairmanship of the party-affiliated Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

Mr. Schulz, do you know Joe Biden?
Schulz:
Well, actually.
As chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Senate, he was a regular contact for almost all European politicians.
I myself negotiated the transatlantic free trade agreement TTIP with Joe Biden.
We met long and intensively several times in Brussels and Washington.
