(CNN Spanish) ––
Rubén Vargas, Minister of the Interior of the government of the interim president of Peru Francisco Sagasti, resigned this Wednesday after 14 days in office.
Vargas was sworn in along with the rest of Sagasti's cabinet, who, in turn, assumed the presidency of the country amid a political crisis that began on November 9 with the removal of Martín Vizcarra.
The same that continued days later with the resignation of Manuel Merino, who succeeded Vizcarra in office, after several protests and the death of two young people.

In his resignation letter, Vargas says: «We assumed the position of leading the Interior sector in an obviously critical scenario.
However, we understood that his call responded to the need to ensure that the National Police of Peru regains the confidence of the citizenry and guarantees the democratic transition to the new government.
Sagasti's interim government promoted a process of "strengthening and modernizing the police," as he himself called it.
Which began with the appointment of a new general commander of the Police and the retirement of 18 generals.
In an interview with various local media on Sunday, Sagasti said that this process had his full support.
Also that of the president of the Council of Ministers, Violeta Bermúdez, as he said.

Rubén Vargas talks about the measures taken by the Police
Vargas referred in his letter of resignation to the actions taken.
“We are aware that the measures implemented, despite their absolute legality and urgent need, have affected the spirits of some political sectors, putting the path outlined at risk.
Even when it comes to reactions typical of measures of this nature and scope, we understand that they affect the main objective of his administration for the following months: to guarantee the democratic transition to the new government.
Vargas also said: "We are fully aware that this feat to improve our National Police of Peru does not end with the appointment of a minister."
The president of the Council of Ministers must appear before Congress this Thursday.
It will be with the aim of requesting a vote of confidence from the cabinet appointed by Sagasti almost two weeks ago.
Vargas' resignation looks like a political gesture.
Which seeks not to jeopardize the vote of confidence that the cabinet will ask for in Congress on Thursday.
If he does not receive the vote of confidence, the ministers must resign.
In recent days the decisions taken regarding the changes made in the Police generated criticism from Parliament.
