The cultivation of the tobacco crop in Daraa has witnessed a remarkable improvement this season. The cultivated area reached 700 dunums compared to 390 dunums in the previous season, while in the middle of last October, the harvest operations began in the warehouses of the General Organization in Deir Ali, amid easy procedures in terms of receipt and payment of financial dues to farmers according to the promotional price Specified by the government.
Daraa farmers demanded the reopening of the marketing centers in the governorate, especially in the city of Izraa, due to its middle geographical location, stressing that the transportation fees paid by the General Organization for Tobacco Growers cover shipping expenses, while the Southern Branch of the Tobacco Corporation secured all the farmers' needs of fuel, fertilizers and pesticides.
The farmers emphasized that the activation of nurseries to secure seedlings contributed to reducing the cost to farmers by providing seedlings at appropriate times, which was reflected in the quality of production and its increase.
For his part, the head of the Agricultural Affairs Office of the Daraa Farmers Union, Ahmed Hegazy, said in a statement to the SANA Economic Bulletin that the Public Institution pays for tobacco farmers transportation fees ranging from 8 thousand to 11 thousand pounds per ton depending on the distance traveled and the distance of the planting place from the place of delivery in Deir Ali, stressing that the harvest of Daraa He received the attention of all concerned and was rated excellent
He added that the prices paid by the state are encouraging, and they were raised in this season to 2,400 pounds per kilogram of the excellent type, and it was 1800 last season and 1650 pounds for the good type compared to 1,330 pounds last season, indicating that production estimates reach 161 tons at an average of 230 kilograms per acre.
Tobacco cultivation is spread in the regions of Izra, Hajjah, Al-Sanamayn, Qarafa, Khirbet Ghazala, Al-Ajami, Khirbet Qais and others.
