US cuts diplomatic staff in Iraq

The US Embassy in Baghdad has decided to withdraw some of its staff for security reasons, as US interests in the country have been targeted by a series of rocket attacks in recent months, said Iraqi officials told AFP.

“They had informed us and the main diplomats, including the ambassador, remain there.

According to a second Iraqi official, this partial withdrawal aims to

, without specifying the number of American diplomats, of the few hundred present in the country, on departure.

The US State Department declined to comment, recalling that the security of US representatives, as well as its citizens and facilities
