(CNN) -

The Defense Department on Wednesday released the first images of a covid-19 vaccination registration card and vaccination kits.

The vaccination cards will be used as the "easiest" way to track covid-19 vaccines, said Dr. Kelly Moore, associate director of the Immunization Action Coalition, which supports frontline workers who will administer covid-19 vaccines.

"Everyone will be given a written card that they can put in their wallet that will tell them what they had and when they should get their next dose," Moore said.

Let's do the simple and easy first.

Everyone will understand.

Vaccination clinics will also inform their state immunization registries which vaccine was administered, so that, for example, an entity could inquire if it does not know where a patient received the first dose.

Moore said many places plan to ask patients to voluntarily provide a cell phone number, so they can receive a text message telling them when and where the next dose is scheduled.

Each administered dose will be reported to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Claire Hannan, executive director of the Association of Immunization Managers.

The CDC did not immediately respond to CNN's question about whether the database would include a registry of all immunized people.

Vaccination kits

As for the vaccine kits, the image released by the Department of Defense shows that the kits include a card, needle and syringe, alcohol wipes and a mask.

Operation Warp Speed has 100 million vaccine kits ready when distribution of a coronavirus vaccine begins, Gen. Gustave Perna, director of operations for the government initiative, said last month.

The images appear as two companies, Pfizer and Moderna, await emergency use authorizations (US) in the United States.

A panel with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to debate whether to authorize the US on December 10-17.

If Pfizer and Moderna obtain authorization, the first shipments could be made on December 15 and 22, respectively, according to a document from Operation Warp Speed.

Initial supplies in the United States will be limited and the general population will not have access to vaccines until months later in 2021. A CDC panel recommended Tuesday that long-term care and health care workers get vaccinated first.

By February, 100 million Americans could be vaccinated against the coronavirus, Moncef Slaoui, a senior adviser at Operation Warp Speed, said Wednesday.

The United States has said that if both Pfizer and Moderna obtain emergency use authorization from the FDA in December, they could distribute 40 million doses of vaccines by the end of the month.

Each vaccine requires two doses, making it enough for 20 million people.

CNN's Maggie Fox, Jason Hanna, and Madeline Holcombe contributed to this report.
