Mr. Erdogan also considered that the assassination of the scientist targeted "

regional peace

".

But the efforts of "

dark circles that want to drag the region into instability

" will be in vain, he said.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was assassinated on Friday in an attack near Tehran, attributed by the Islamic Republic of Iran to Israel, its sworn enemy.

Israel has not officially responded to these accusations.

During the telephone interview with his Iranian counterpart, the Turkish president also spoke of the situation in Nagorno Karabakh, an independentist region of Azerbaijan with a majority Armenian, in the grip of a deadly conflict this autumn.

It is extremely important to avoid any action which could undermine the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan,

” he said.

Ankara has been Baku's main supporter in its conflict with Armenia in Nagorno Karabakh.

A cessation of hostilities agreement was signed on November 9 under the aegis of the Kremlin, as Armenia had to commit to making several Azerbaijani districts out of Baku's control for 30 years.

Turkey announced on Tuesday that it had signed an agreement with Russia on the establishment of a joint observation center whose mission will be to monitor the ceasefire in Nagorno Karabakh.
