What could be better than gambling to fight against tax fraud?

Inspired by Taiwanese, Chinese, Maltese and Portuguese experiences, Rome has been preparing since 2016 a lottery of a particular kind: a receipt lottery which will finally start on January 1st.

Since December 1, any adult residing in Italy can register on a portal to obtain a "lottery code" downloaded to their mobile phone, which they must present at the cash desk for each of their purchases in stores, restaurants or for personal services.

This code will allow him to participate in a weekly, monthly and annual lottery organized on the web.

Whose first prize for the annual draw, in January 2022, will go up to 5 million euros.

The lottery will also include ten prizes of 100,000 euros for the monthly draws, and fifteen of 25,000 euros for the weekly draws.

To involve traders, they too will have their share.

With the operation aimed at combating cash payments and educating Italians recalcitrant to electronic payment, only payments in cards or through digital transactions will participate in the lottery.

Each euro spent will give the right to a lottery ticket, up to a limit of 1000 tickets.

Online purchases, business expenses and any expense giving rise to tax deduction are excluded.

Best of all, the lucky winners will have their winnings exempt from income tax, like gambling tax.
