The dramatic developments that the Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) fears because of the corona epidemic are hardly confirmed by the sports clubs in the district.

  • BLSV President Jörg Ammon fears a dramatic decline in membership.

  • TuS Geretsried has 200 members less because there were fewer admissions than usual.

  • TSV Wolfratshausen benefits from the "personal closeness of the athletes to their club"

Bad Toelz-Wolfratshausen -

The Bavarian State Sports Association (BLSV) fears a dramatic decline in membership as a result of the corona pandemic: by the end of the year, according to the projections of the umbrella association of all sports clubs in the Free State, over 100,000 athletes will have turned their backs on their respective clubs.

From the first lockdown in March to the easing of the resumption of sport in four stages from June to September, organized sport in Bavaria is recording a continuous decline in membership.

This is reinforced by the current measures with the closure of the leisure and amateur sports area in November and December.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of people leaving Bavaria has so far totaled around 80,000. Another 65,000 have noted their termination for the coming year, so they will no longer be members of the association from January 2021.

BLSV President Jörg Ammon appeals to the unity of Bavarian sport: “Our top priority must be to bring people back into the sports clubs.

It is essential to return to indoor sports as soon as possible.

Sport must be given the opportunity to make its contribution to keeping people healthy again. "

At TV Bad Tölz, there are significantly more exits than entrances

Jane Clarke, chairwoman of TV Bad Tölz, can confirm this “frightening tendency”.

She looked up the documents of the association with the largest number of members in the southern district (2400 members) and stated: “In 2019 we had 250 exits and 297 entries.

This year we have already received around 400 layoffs, but only added 211 members. ”She has heard a lot of dramatic figures from colleagues on the board in Munich.

“In the country, we still have a much more pronounced sense of family in the club.

You stay loyal to your club even in times of need. "

When it comes to loyalty to the club, Stephan Bammer cannot complain either.

The second chairman of TV Lenggries has only posted two resignations in the past few months.

“It's just the usual in and out when someone moves away or when, for example, mother-child gymnastics is over in terms of age.” Otherwise, Bammer is extremely happy with the development of the gymnastics club.

In the past ten years it has grown from 1,100 to 1,400 members.

“And that in all of our seven divisions,” says Bammer.

He also ascribes a not inconsiderable role in staying on TV to the annual contributions, which have been constant for a long time.

“An adult pays 60 euros, a family with two children 150 euros.

These are not relevant costs. "

At SV Bad Tölz, membership fees are debited in January and February.

So now is the time to cancel membership.

But chairman Sebastian John has observed the opposite.

“Children were added to basketball throughout the year.” The growth in the next generation of footballers is also unabated.

Every summer the SV organizes introductory training for the Bambini.

"After that we even registered a third F-youth this year", reports John.

"I am very happy and grateful that the members remain loyal to us."

At TuS Geretsried, the departures remain stable, but there are fewer new registrations

TuS Geretsried has actually seen a decrease in membership - from around 2500 to 2300 now. "That is not because of the number of people leaving, but because there were fewer entries," reports Mirko Naumann.

The number of those who turned their backs on TuS in the year that is drawing to a close remained stable.

“In 2019 we had 377 departures, this time there were 456,” the CEO lists.

The number of new members has fallen sharply: "Otherwise there are around 480 annually, while we will only have around 230 new members in 2020." This time, there was a lull, especially in the phase after the summer holidays, when many school children usually join a sports club.

“That could have been because the footballers didn't finish their season, for example,” Naumann suspects.

But the small number of newcomers runs across all eleven departments of TuS, which was founded in 1949.

"Indoor athletes are probably a little more affected by this development," says the club boss.

Since the corona infections have not yet decreased significantly despite the "lockdown light" in November, his forecast for the coming year does not look very rosy.

Naumann: "We will probably have to reckon with restrictions until March." But as far as the number of members is concerned, "this dent will be evened out over time".

Alfred Barth, chairman of TSV Wolfratshausen

In contrast, everything is stable at TSV Wolfratshausen, which is the fourth largest club in the district with currently 1,826 members and six departments.

“We can't complain,” says Alfred Barth, who has just finished his annual report and therefore has all the relevant figures ready.

In the year that is drawing to a close, the Wolves counted 140 departures, which the First Chairman describes as “the usual fluctuation”.

These included 92 children and adolescents and 47 adults.

About 128 athletes entered during the same period.

According to Barth, most of the cancellations were made by gymnasts and track and field athletes.

The reason why the wolves did not suffer the massive slump that the BLSV fears is due to "the personal proximity of the athletes to their club".

There are many friendships that have grown across all sectors among the members of the TSV, which was founded in 1864.

Barth wants to avoid someone turning their back on the sports club due to financial problems: "In such a case we will find ways and means."

At BCF Wolfratshausen, the numbers are roughly balanced

There is also little evidence of a negative trend at BCF Wolfratshausen.

"That probably affects the clubs in Munich more," says Karen Hellwig.

The branch manager even found a plus in her new entrants - from 175 (2019) to 182. “We keep getting registrations, especially for badminton, table tennis and gymnastics,” says Hellwig happily.

On the other hand there are 137 terminations, so that the total number of members now amounts to 1390.

“It's all roughly in balance,” says the managing director.

Also complaints from active people who are currently unable to pursue their sport have hardly been received.

Even if the prognoses vary from club to club, TV boss Jane Clarke is still looking positively into the future: “The children are hungry for exercise.

Even if there is a valley now, it will definitely go up again. "
