About 50 Belarusians in Israel demonstrated last night (Thursday) in front of the prime minister's residence on Balfour Street in Jerusalem in protest of Israel's silence in the face of the Lukashenko regime's terrorism. A sign with a photo of the Minsk ambassador, Alex Goldman-Sheinman, shaking hands with Lukashenko, during the delivery of the treaty letters about two weeks ago.
According to protest organizers, although Israel does not officially support Lukashenko, when the ambassador in Minsk handed over the treaty letters to the president who forged his election victory, Jerusalem actually recognized him.
The demonstrators demanded that Israel support the popular protest in Belarus - or at least condemn the violence, as did the EU and US countries.
Following the submission of the charter two weeks ago, the Foreign Ministry explained the move to maintain an open diplomatic channel to safeguard Israel's unique interests, especially the needs of the Jewish community, but to date no senior member of the Jewish community has requested any assistance from Israel.
