Tensions between Iran and Israel continue to increase following the recent escalation over a killed scientist.

Now Israel's government has warned its citizens abroad of a growing threat.

"In view of the latest threats (...) we fear that Iran could attack Israeli targets," said the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

A week ago, the Iranian nuclear physicist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was killed in a targeted attack near Tehran.

Iran accused Israel of being responsible for the attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once called him the "father of the Iranian nuclear program", while the US media called him "the number one target" of the Israeli secret service Mossad.

According to the Foreign Ministry, possible destinations are Israeli citizens in Africa and in countries geographically close to Iran, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

From diplomatic circles it was said that Israel's Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi had canceled a planned visit to Bahrain at the weekend because of the Iranian threats.

Iran's President Hassan Ruhani on Saturday insulted Israel as a US mercenary and accused them of being responsible for the attack.

Iran wanted to take revenge "in due course", but not allow itself to be pushed into a "trap."

Israeli authorities have not commented on the attack.

The missile expert Fakhrizadeh was buried in the capital Tehran on Monday.

The ceremony was broadcast live on state television.

Because of the corona crisis, only family members of the scientist and high-ranking generals were allowed to attend the funeral.

Speculation about "satellite-controlled weapon"

There are contradicting reports and speculations about the course of the attack.

Initially, it was said that Fakhrizadeh and his team had been shot by at least six attackers.

Pictures from the crime scene showed bullet holes on the windshield of a vehicle.

Then the news portal Al-Alam reports that there were no attackers at all and that the attack was carried out with a "satellite-controlled weapon" made in Israel.

The head of the intelligence service responsible for the case, Mahmud Alawi, did not want to comment on the speculations before the end of the investigation.

However, the Security Council spoke of a "technically professional attack".

In the past few days there has also been criticism of the country's security forces.

They could have foreseen the attack and prevented it, it said.
