A project to support them all in the light.
Supported by Gandalf and Bilbo, a fundraising campaign hopes to turn Tolkien's family home in Oxford, where the famous British author wrote
The Lord of the Rings
and
The Hobbit,
into a museum
.
The “Northmoor Project”, named after the street where the house is located, was launched by British novelist Julia Golding, who gave herself three months to raise the money needed for this project.

The stated goal is to raise 4.5 million pounds (5 million euros) to renovate this seven-bedroom house, which has a large garden, in order to recreate the interior in which Tolkien lived.
But also to organize retreats, writers' residences and cultural events.
"
We want to transform Tolkien's house not into an arid museum, but a welcoming and creative house
", explain the organizers of this fundraising in a press release.
The famous British author moved to this mansion in north Oxford in 1930 and lived there for seventeen years, teaching English at a nearby university.
It was in this large brown stone house that he wrote
The Hobbit
, originally thought of as a children's tale to read before going to bed.
Then, a little later
The Lord of the Rings
.

The project has already received support from actors Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman, who respectively play Gandalf and Bilbo in film adaptations of Tolkien's works.
"
We cannot succeed in this project without the support of the international community of Tolkien fans
", pleaded Ian McKellen, appealing for the generosity of this "
community of donors
".
They are joined by John Rhys-Davies (the interpreter of Gimli), Annie Lennox, who sang on the soundtrack of The
Return of the King
, Derek Jacobi, who played in the biopic
Tolkien
, or John Howe, famous illustrator of The
Lord. of the Rings
.
"
It's incredible, given the importance of his work, that there is no center dedicated to Tolkien in the world,"
comments John Rhys-Davis in the video.
The idea is to make his house a literary place, which can inspire generations of writers, artists and directors in the years to come.
"
Raising 4.5 million pounds in three months is a huge challenge
," Julia Golding conceded, "
But you only have to look at Frodo and Sam's journey to Mount Doom, which took the same length of time, to tell yourself that we too can do it.
