The Puerto Rico Department of Health reported that vaccination against covid-19 on the island could begin in mid-December.

However, the authorities understand that everything will depend on the decision of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA, for its acronym in English).

“The estimated date to begin vaccinating is December 15, but before that a series of events must occur that is not in the control of the government of Puerto Rico.

Before starting to vaccinate, the FDA must authorize the use of the vaccines.

They are expected to meet for this evaluation, regarding the Pfizer vaccine, between December 8 and 10;

later, they will evaluate Moderna's.

Subsequently, the Advisory Committee on Vaccination Practices of (the) CDC will issue the final recommendations on how this vaccination process will be ”, reads the statements of the government agency sent to CNN.

This is how they prepare for the arrival of the vaccine against covid-19

Precisely, several days ago, Iris Cardona, undersecretary of Health of the governorate, confirmed the efforts that are being coordinated.

“In preparation for that, we have first identified the science behind these vaccines, the storage requirements, how they are prepared, how they should be administered, the sequence of the doses, and so on.

The Department of Health has done that through the vaccination program, ”Cardona said.

The announcement was made at a press conference in La Fortaleza.

There, Governor Wanda Vázquez gave details of the measures to avoid contagion of the coronavirus.

“Our Government continues to work actively in all efforts to protect the life of each of us who live in Puerto Rico in the face of the covid-19 epidemic.

That is why we met with the health and financial team due to the increase in cases, ”said Vázquez.

Cardona did not specify the amount of vaccines that the Government would receive.

“But we are not going to get two million or a million vaccines immediately.

Because this does depend on the ability of the pharmaceutical company to produce it, "said Cardona.
