In the poorest states on the planet, the most disastrous effect of the pandemic is economic and social.
These 47 least developed countries (LDCs) are experiencing their worst performance in thirty years this year, warns the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), with a drop in per capita income of 2.6%.
"We feared a health catastrophe given their very weak health systems"
, explains Rolf Traeger, chief responsible for LDCs.
The toll was less heavy with 17 deaths per million inhabitants against 138 in middle-income countries.
This is thanks to a later arrival of the virus, in Africa in particular, which made it possible to anticipate isolation measures, and due to the low population density.
On the other hand, their capacity to mitigate the consequences of the crisis with support measures for households and businesses is very limited.
