Hong Kong Customs took an anti-illicit cigarette operation yesterday (4th) and seized about 8 million suspected illicit cigarettes in Yuen Long, with an estimated market value of about 22 million yuan and a taxable value of about 15 million yuan.
So far this year, the number of illicit cigarettes seized by the customs has exceeded the number of illicit cigarettes seized in a single year in the past 20 years, and has exceeded the total number of illicit cigarettes seized in the past three years.
During the operation, customs officers arrested 4 men and 1 woman, aged between 35 and 65, and detained two containers suspected of being involved in the case.
The Customs will hold a press conference tomorrow (6th) to explain the details of the operation and summarize the effectiveness of the Customs' enforcement against illicit cigarettes this year.
